So my favorite podcast, Talking Simpsons, asked me to be a guest on its gayest episode! Click here to listen to me go on and on about Homer’s Phobia, a.k.a. the Simpsons episode where John Waters teaches Homer not to be scared of gay dudes.
Fair warning: We talk for more than two hours, about the discomfort of being a gay nerd, of coming of age in the 90s and how well the show’s artists captured the blue collar bear aesthetic in that gay steel mill.
Funny story: I started listening to Talking Simpsons years ago during a long car ride. I loved it, and listening to that show actually inspired me to do my own podcasts. So not only was it really cool to join the hosts and talk shop on a pro level, but I also go to tell the gay co-host of the show, Henry Gilbert, about how much it means to nerds like me that he hosts the show as an openly queer person. It’s always scary to wade into any fan community and test the waters to see how cool they’re going to be with your sexual identity. Because Henry is out, I never have to worry about there being that gross nerd-bro culture on this show. And that’s probably why I like this podcast.
And yes, BTW, they do have a Patreon.
omg thank you for giving a general recommendation for talking simpsons, now i have a good podcast to listen to while i draw! (plus ive been slowly getting into the simpsons so this is exciting, im glad they're going chronologically)
Yeah!! I really like that they put it in a historical context, research all the references, and give a little backstory of what was happening behind the scenes. Like I’ve watched the DVD commentaries before, but these dudes are so chock full of extra junk and it’s great. Also I like that they kind of indulge about how it affected them when they first watched it as kids, cause I can relate!
They do a bunch of other podcasts too, and another one I’m really into is ‘Thirty Twenty Ten’, where they basically do the same thing, but with whatever was happening in media/pop culture this week, 30, 20, and 10 years ago.
ANYWAY I’m glad you’re digging into simps! And glad to throw you a rec!
