the assurance in the other’s voice is OLD. born of someone, or something, with wisdom that far outpaces his own and, he suspects, lives lived. it’s instinct - that low, smug suggestion - that has him dropping the gem. his palm burns where it was, a warning all its own and nearly unheeded save for the other worldly visitor. his heel moves to it, finding the corners, pressing down. the gun will do little but whatever this is? he knows better than to hand it over. “ain’t one for magic tricks. an’ you ain’t gonna like what I do next if you step any closer.” his heel grinds into the gem. will it break? he’s unsure, but he just needs time to think through his options.
