He turned his head slightly, her voice barely audible over the other guests, a sweet melody lost between laughter and conversation. With a frown he pushed back his seat, yet not before a hand gently lay itself on his shoulder.
Matilda gave him a smile, the kind your mother would give you when she saw you liked someone, that irritating, patronising smile, yet the one you secretly appreciated. “Where are you off to?”
“I swear I can hear Sparrow,” he muttered, looking up at the roof. “Sounds like she’s singing.”
With a soft chuckle she gave him the slightest nod, retracting her arm from its place. “Well, don’t keep her waiting, Chester.”
A playful sneer grew on his lips as he stood, making his way behind her. “You’re one to talk, sis.”
Weaving and dodging his way through crowds of known and unknown faces, he found himself in the kitchen, desolate of activity save for a particular white haired woman standing by the sink, pouring a glass of what he presumed was eggnog.
Not finding a reason to interrupt her he made his way to the back door, his clawed hand reaching for the doorknob.
“Where are you off to, Chester?”
He swiftly turned to face the woman, now able to see her in full view. She was smiling, swaying slightly with her honeyed skin tinged a slight shade of red. Rather then her usual attire, she wore a baggy christmas sweater and track pants, a playful grin on her face.
“I’m just going to see Taliyah, Miss Riven,” for a moment he hesitated, giving her a timid smile. “If that’s okay with you.”
She giggled, slapping her palm against the counter. His eyes widened for a moment at the sight. In all the years he had known her, Riven was possibly the most dour person she knew.
She must have been real drunk.
“Of course!” She said, wiping a tear from her eye. “I won’t stop you two from nesting.” She swiftly followed the remark with a hearty drag from her tankard, leaning on the black marble counter for support.
A small, humoured smile began to grow on him as she swayed. “Thank you, Miss Riven.”
And with that he was gone, following the sparrows voice.
