"Wicked" Games with Which to Loathe Each Other
My latest video is about duet games for "toxic pairings," inspired by Wicked! I'm transparently trying to catch some views for the Algorithm, but I think I do a good job highlighting why duet games, especially those that let you play to hate your partner, are interesting. I also briefly interviewed Jeff Stormer, who maybe has more (recorded) experience playing two player RPGs than anyone else in the hobby.

Tangled Blessings is a solo journaling or two-player RPG inspired by dark academia media, ghost stories, and graduate school. Featuring a wizarding college, wandering specters, assigned houses, curses, devils’ bargains and more supernatural flavor, Tangled Blessings blends horror and the fantastical to help players craft a story that spans their time at the academy — culminating in one final showdown against their rival.
A deck of tarot cards and a way to record the story are the only items required to play. Based on the ENnie-nominated Anamnesis game system by Samantha Leigh, players first draw from the tarot deck to discover which house they belong to and then they’ll discover who of 22 possible rivals will shadow their time at the Academy. In two-player games, players rival each other, working together to unravel their shared and complicated history at the academy shrouded in darkness.

Finally got my copies of Tangled Blessings and the new expansion Echoes of Lost Electives by @cassimothwin!
Cassi was the first person to give me a chance at game design by letting me write for House None Years 1 & 2 and House of Elements Years 3 & 4. It was a joy to flex my creative writing muscles and come up with some truly horrific and evocative prompts for a genre I feel very much at home in.
Can’t wait to see what players do with it!

This Monday, July 8th, at 6:30pm EDT, I'm playing @cassimothwin's Tangled Blessings with Colin Epstein of The Roll Report podcast! What mischief will we two rivals get up to at the magically dangerous Brackroot Academy? Only one way to find out!
I have been itching to play Tangled Blessings since it came out. In fact, I pulled the move of buying it for a friend when I saw it at my favorite game store, a classic sign that I myself want to play a game. After playing Anamnesis (which originated the game mechanics used in Tangled Blessings) and listening to the Tangled Blessings episodes of Party of One, I made plans for this stream! (I am constantly hearing people play games on Party of One and then saying "now I must play that game" because I'm a dirty dirty idea thief.)
I'm very excited to play with Colin, who (if you can't tell from their picture) has a flair for the dramatic, which means this game will be a juicy one.
