These two are from my Elder Scrolls tabletop campaign. Iromar is a bit too friendly with the wood elf who has a habit of pick pocketing his merchandise.

Fireside Chat

Another random little scene I had in my head with Astarion and Tannivh. Where are they? Who knows! Somewhere in the wilderness! With the rest of the party.

The night was crisp, the sky sparkled with stars. The fire crackled, and the camp quietly buzzed with a bit of dinner time chatter. Gale’s Deer Stew was on the menu again, thanks to Tannivh.

“Well, I guess you really are a man of the wilds! Snatched up a mighty big one, too!” The wizard had said with that charming grin when the elf returned with his haul. He hadn’t been gone long and had returned with a stag.

It was the horns and bones he wanted, really. Tannivh knew how to whittle them into some fine and deadly arrowheads. He needed some new arrows, and it’d give him something to do as the others slept. That was exactly what he was doing when Astarion returned from a hunt of his own, though his haul was already in his belly. The vampire spawn swiftly took to hovering over Nivh’s shoulder with a little giggle, squatting down and paying little mind to the concept of “personal space.” He was a touch blood drunk.

“What have we here? Seems you’ve got a little project going here.” A rumble of acknowledgement sounded from Nivh, though he didn’t look up from his work. Astarion plucked up a freshly carved arrowhead, regarding it with a certain deadly sort of curiosity. “Do you think you could make me some of these? They look like they’d cut rather nicely into whatever you shoot at.”

“Depends on what you’re shooting at.”

“Goblins and other people seem to be all that we’ve been fighting. Well, mostly. Though, you did take down that bulette with arrows back in the Underdark, and you were using just whatever old things we’ve scavenged thus far.” Astarion waved the arrowhead at Tannivh while continuing, “So I really wonder how much it matters.”

Tannivh paused, looking up from his work finally, up to Astarion. “I also had acid arrows to wear through its armor, Cheza’s poison, and a bit of your handy knife work… These arrowheads, for example, wouldn’t do a damn thing on their own.” He turned his emerald gaze back down to his work. “Against people, though, they’ll work just fine.”

Astarion pursed his lips and examined the arrowhead again before tossing it down with the others while standing. “I’ll have to see if I can’t steal a few of the finished product for myself.”

“Should I scratch Cazador’s name into one?” The question, asked partly in jest, earned a bark of a laugh out of Astarion.

“HAH! How thoughtful of you. No, I’m afraid I’ll need more than pitiful little arrows.” Tannivh paused again, this time caught in a thought. He’d heard that tone before. That tinge of apprehension, perhaps even fear.

“Is that so? And what is it we need?” He was careful with his tone, keeping it curious, but stripped of any possible judgmental tinges. He’d come to understand Astarion well enough to know to broach the topic with care. The pale elf planted his hands on his hips with a sigh.

“I don’t know. I… I don’t even know where to begin. The only thing keeping any of you alive is the virtue that we’re too far for him to personally eviscerate.”

“Astarion,” Tannivh idly ran his thumb over the blade of the knife he was using, continuing with pointed, but measured words, “What all can he do, exactly? You’ve served him for two centuries. If anyone here knows him, it would be you.”

He was prepared for the red glare he got from Astarion. He had a feeling the man would assume that there was an insinuation with those words, despite the fact there actually wasn’t. “You think I’m blowing this out of proportion, don’t you?”

“I never said that.”

“No, you didn’t, but …fine, I’ll humor you. He can turn into mist, shrug off most of these little trinkets we call ‘weapons’, call beasts… In short, he is a deadly enemy to have.” Tannivh nodded slowly, taking the information in.

“Perhaps it would serve you well to look at this from a different perspective. You said that vampire spawn are similar to true vampires. “All of the flaws, few of the perks,” I think is how you worded it. So, if that’s true, that would mean that Cazador is weak to sunlight, running water, holy… stuff… and must adhere to the law of invitation,” Nivh paused a moment and motioned to Astarion just then. “But, at least currently, you are immune to most of those, correct?”

“I am, yes, thanks to the little worm.”

“Right. So, that is one leg up you have on him. Furthermore, in the scope of things, we’re looking at killing, or at least subduing, a would-be “god” in our quest to, basically, not become beasts, or “undergo ceremorphosis” as Gale put it. In that scope, a vampire that has that many weaknesses and can, in fact, bleed and be dismembered, suddenly doesn’t seem that bad.”

Astarion shook his head. “While I … I suppose you’re right, I also feel like you’re either profoundly stupid, or astoundingly brave. … Though, thus far, it seems the scales tip in the direction of the latter. Still, I can’t help but feel like you’re very foolishly underestimating him.”

Tannivh leveled his eyes on Astarion with a certain degree of seriousness. “I’m a hunter. I hunt. I don’t have time to stop and second guess myself because I’m afraid. That time is better spent learning about my prey and figuring the best course of action. Besides, everything can die, it’s just a matter of the how and the when.” Astarion opened his mouth to give a rebuttal, but was cut off by Nivh. “Also, it sounds to me like we’ve got plenty of weapons in our arsenal. Fire is always a good fallback, as there is very little that can shrug off the damage a good blaze can do, and both yourself and Gale can create it on a whim. Assuming Shadowheart hasn’t stabbed us in the back by that point and can be convinced to give a shit, she’d come in handy. She’s clearly a woman of some sort of faith, so her spells would be of great use. Wyll’s a monster hunter by trade, so he no doubt has knowledge to share and would be a great boon in such a hunt. We are not useless little chicks, flapping about before the jaws of a hungry wolf. Consider that.”

Astarion was actually silent a moment, considering Tannivh’s words, cocking his head to the side. In the meantime, the wood elf went back to his work, having said his peace.

“So, what, I’m to trust a bunch of wild idiots and use them against my old master?”

“You’re already using us, so I don’t see what the problem is.” That caused Astarion blink.

“What?”

Tannivh rolled his eyes.

“You’re already using us. It was clear we were all, at least in the beginning, a means to an end.” He looked up to Astarion again. “... Though some of us are a bit more… physically used than others.” Astarion smirked a bit as his mind went to their more intimate interactions (aside from him occasionally snacking on the ranger), before he threw his hands up.

“Alas! The strange hunter has seen straight through me! My plans are foiled! Oh woe is me.” He crossed his arms over his chest, then. That smirk still clung to his lips. “I guess I can go along with that idea. You all seem like you’d make fine meat shields, if nothing else.”

“That’s the spirit! Cocky and condescending looks much better on you.” The odd little compliment earned Tannivh a bubbly chuckle.

“Oh, I think you’ll find there’s quite a lot that looks good on me, darling.”

Nivh scoffed and lifted the knife to wag at Astarion while responding, “Keep that up, and I won’t make you any new arrows for you to… soundly miss the targets you’re shooting at with.”

“I beg your pardon! I NEVER miss!” Ah, yes, there’s the arrogance he’s more accustomed to hearing out of Astarion. He shook his head, and went back to work.

I did a doodle, and then felt like doing a little character card for Tannivh.

Also, yes, he has lower INT than Astarion. Nivh is 100% a country bumpkin, but he's also the only one with any common sense in this party, good grief. I attribute it to his WIS being so high.

That said, he's also the one who does all of the talking, which is... a mistake, given that his idea of a good conversation partner is his spider companion...

Okay, so, I got a random bug in my brainmeat and went "Witcher AU? Witcher AU."

My dear Tannivh would be a Cat School witcher, given that they're the only school that was willing to make non-humans into witchers.

He makes a mighty handsome witcher. *whistles* Though, I did ditch his box braids. I didn't feel up to that kind of effort. I've toiled with the idea of him still having a "companion," as it's not really shown in any of the Witcher stuff if various beasties can be domesticated or not. I decided he probably still has Cheza in some form of a giant spider ("arachnomorph"). (I didn't sketch her. I don't feel like sketchin' a spidie.)

Of course, this leads to the question, "What about Astarion?" Well, I thought about it. He sure as hell wouldn't be a True Higher Vampire like Regis. His schtick in BG3 is that he isn't a true vampire, so why not keep that theme going? I was going to say Bruxae, but they seem to be all women. Then I stumbled across the Mula/Muleh vampires, which seemed like a good fit (they seem to be the male equivalent of Bruxae/Alps). He comes out ahead with this, honestly. Gets to have claws, inhuman strength, turn into mist, turn invisible, use telepathy... Even better news: He can now drink booze and still walk in the sunlight. Downsides: Still has no reflection. Also, his vampiric form is... well... a bit more beastly. I imagine he probably pops that face on to spook people, because I could see him being an absolute shithead like that. (I couldn't resist making him grin like the gremlin he is.)

The notes are Tannivh's, as he's found himself miserably stuck happily travelling with Astarion. He might as well study him, though he's still a bit suspicious of why Astarion's sticking around him. It certainly has nothing to do with wanting to have a silver wielding, monster-slaying meat shield in case the other vampires he pissed off come knocking. Of course not.

Also: Tannivh's "small for a Mula" note is because in the leaked (but also unused) game data from Witcher 3, Mulas are classed as "huge," which makes me think they were meant to be like Katakan sized or bigger, and I just think it'd be hilarious if Astarion's vampire form only gives him a few scant inches of height (and some muscle bulk), and thus "small" by comparison. Small and fast.
