Her ledger was red. There was no taking it back. It was never her choice. Her entire life had been taken from her. Her targets never expected her to be the one who took their life. She was charming when she needed to be. Men became putty in her hands which only made her job that much easier. She was still deep undercover as she stood in the office. She had been summoned and she only assumed was that maybe something had changed. When she heard the doors open, she didn’t turn around. She kept her back turned.
“What do you need me to do?”
“I need you to go undercover. Get close to someone.”
“You will be the perfect distraction for Captain America.”
She slowly turned to face the man. She could feel her heart start beating harder. Seeing the man she would rather see dead than be around. “Why?” She questioned.
“Are you questioning me? Tell me daughter, do you care about him?” He gripped her tightly by her wrist but with her training she was able to get out of his grasp easily. “Don’t touch me.” Her words angered him enough that he grabbed her roughly by the chin and made her look into his eyes. “I own you. You will do what I say….and if you think about running off….you’ll join your mother sooner than you think.”
“Go ahead then. Do it. Kill me. I can promise you this I will find a way to kill you myself.”
He grabbed her by the throat. Her eyes widened as oxygen quickly left her lungs. She reached up and grabbed his hand. “Are you foolish enough to think that I care? I would kill you but you daughter are my greatest weapon. Blood ties mean nothing to me. You are a means to a end. You will get close to him.” He let go of her throat. As much as she wanted to kill him in that moment she knew that it was too risky. “What do you have to say for yourself now?”
“Я готов отвечить.” (Ready to comply) She wait until her father had left the room and then left herself. Once she knew she was safe she pulled out her burner phone and pressed the speed dial. “Is the line secure?” She heard the voice on the other end. “Yes.” “Are you safe?” “For now. I’m going to need your help and you know that I don’t ask for it often.” She sighed. She knew that he would be her way in. “What do you need Agent Markov?” “He wants me to get close to Captain America, to distract him.” “Did he say why?” She shook her head. “No. Fury you know I wouldn’t ask…can you give me a way in.” “Tony Stark has a party coming up. Steve Rogers should be there. I’ll make sure you are that list…..and make sure you wear something nice. Stark’s parties are a little over the top.”
She was wearing a red dress. It didn’t take her long to go to the side of the room and observe. “You don’t look like your having fun. I noticed you from across the room.”
She smiled softly. “Well I’m not lonely now.” As much as she didn’t want to flirt she knew that she needed to in order to get the job done. “I’ve never been to a party quite like this before.” “What’s your name? I don’t recognize you.” She smiled a little bigger. “Now what would be the fun in giving you my name? Isn’t that the whole point of this? To be whoever we want to be even if it’s just for the night?” She watched him for a moment. “I like that.” She could sense the hint of a smile in his voice. “Would you like to dance?”
“Okay.” She said simply as she took the man’s hand. He lead her out onto the dance floor and put a hand on her hip before beginning to sway with her to the beat of the music. “So you want to be mystery girl tonight?” “Of course I do. Who doesn’t want to pretend to be someone, anyone else than who they really are for a night?” “It sounds like a perfect dream.” He murmured as he looked at her. “What does that even mean?” He laughed. “I don’t know but I like the sound of it. What should I call you…if I can’t know your name.” She laughed as she looked up at him. The song soon finished. “I should probably go mingle I guess.” “We don’t have to keep dancing.” She laughed. “Well dancing is only really enjoyable when you have the right partner.” “I could introduce to my friends…that is if I get your name.” She sighed. “Nicola and that’s all you get.” “Well Nicola. I’m Tony.”
Tony Stark. She had done her homework. Fury had provided her with a way in, with her invite. She let him lead her over to a group of people. She smiled softly as she stood next to him. “This is Clint, Bruce, Thor, and Steve.” She looked around at each person. When she looked at Steve she saw the bluest eyes she had ever seen. “Hello boys.” She said simply. She watched as they watched her for a moment. “This is Nicola.” She smiled softly as she stood there. Another song soon filled the room. “Who wants to dance?” She asked as she tried to keep conversation going. No one said anything. She thought for a moment and then walked over to Steve. “How about you? Do you wanna dance?”
Steve smiled as he looked at her. She extended her hand. “I don’t bite. One dance. Please.” She watched as he took her hand. “I don’t really know how to dance.” She laughed a little. “Don’t worry. I’ll teach you.” She brought him to the dance floor and looked up at him. “Put your hand on my waist.” She took his hand and put it on her waist, right where she wanted it. “Now I’m going to put a hand on your shoulder and then your hand goes in mine.” “I might step on your feet.” She smirked. “Maybe you just haven’t found the right partner to dance with.” She said simply as they slowly started swaying. “Just uhmmmm move to the rhythm and if you feel like it you can pull me closer.”
No sooner had the words left her lips did she feel him pull her closer. “Like that?” She smiled. “Just like that.”
It was like the entire world stopped turning. Sure she had danced with men before but this felt entirely different. That was it. It felt like they were the only two people in the room. The world around them was long forgotten as they swayed to the music. She found herself leaning in and resting her head on his chest. She couldn’t explain it. She was nervous but at the same time it felt the way it should. He smelled woodsy mixed with some citrus notes. She could vaguely smell vanilla and that seemed to ground her. She looked up into his ocean blue eyes and smiled softly. How close was she actually willing to get to him. ‘You can’t fall for him.’ She kept telling herself over and over again. She had no choice. “Everyone’s watching.” She whispered as the song still slowly faded into the background.
Steve watched her. He was curious as to why she has chosen him to dance with out of all the others. The truth was he had been watching her since she had first walked into the room. She was different than a lot of the women that came to the party and he had almost stayed home but changed his mind at the last minute. The way she fit into his arms, the way that they moved together. He blushed when he noticed that she had been looking at him while they danced. He noticed that she smelled like vanilla and citrus. The vanilla seemed to calm his nerves. His heart had raced when she had rested her head against his chest. Seeing her smile made him smile.
She slowly pulled away even though she didn’t want to. She wasn’t sure what to say. All she knew was that she didn’t want the moment to end. She kept repeating that she had a job to do over and over in her head. “I…I should….” She started to say. “Will you dance with me again?” His simple request made her melt. “You could have your pick of anyone that you want….why do you want me?” She asked as she looked into his ocean eyes. “Just dance with me.” The lights dimmed and soon the only light came from the chandeliers. The atmosphere changed from a twilight atmosphere into a starry night one. A slow waltz starts playing, the sweet notes from a violin filling the room. “One more dance, handsome.” She leaned up and kissed his cheek softly. “What was that for?” She smiled as she held his gaze. “It just felt right. Don’t question it and just dance with me.”
