Ren's Friend

Ren was summoned into the world by protecting his friend from an attack that would've hit them and died from it.

After dueling with Eclair, Ren braggs about beating someone who was good at a different game in the game like the world the heros were summoned into. It seems to be a big deal to him that he was able to beat this person. There doesn't seem to be any connection to his friend and this player at this point in the light novels.

After Ren moves into the village and starts trusting Naofumi more, he compares his friend to Naofumi in personality, a shared strength, and appearance. We also get confirmation here that Ren's friend played online games as well, likely with Ren.

In the last and largest bit revealed about Ren's friend we learn that the person he beat in the game like the world they were originally summoned into and his friend are the same person. He asked Naofumi to follow some oddly specific rules while training to try and get Naofumi to replicate his friends fighting style. It's clear Ren deeply respected this friend and misses them. Naofumi compares how Ren is talking about his friend to how Motoyasu talks about Filo, which could hint towards attraction, but is likely just pointing out his obsession.

Considering Ren's obsession with his friend, how he's been repeatedly brought up, and that little quip about how they hope he won't show up among the resurrected I think it's likely that the friend will show up some time in the future volumes. We know the resurrected are only a low ranking branch of the god's army with at least two more branches unaccounted for, and that the sword, spear, and bow spirits weren't able to get their first pick of heros to summon. I think it's likely that this friend was supposed to be summoned instead of Ren and potentially ended up in the god's hands when he wasn't. I think the most likely position they'll find this friend in is one of the people in charge of running a higher military branch for the gods, considering how much guilds come up when the friend is mentioned.
