The "I explain shit better" Post

So I was thinking recently and decided to elaborate on my issues with these particular panels in the comic because that post is already long enough and I feel I did a shit job explaining my stance on it.

First: a little background. The headscarf you see Edd wearing is called Dikhlo. Traditionally, it was worn by married Romani women in place of a wedding ring, but has more recently become a symbol of cultural pride for some. [Edit: Apparently there is some discourse in the community surrounding this so take it with a grain of salt. I'm not entirely caught up on everything yet.]

So my issue isn't so much that a man is wearing dikhlo, since a couple Romani men have taken to wearing them in pride, but having a non-Romani wear dikhlo as a "fortune teller" disguise is insulting.

As for the veil, I've never seen any Roma wear one like that. Maybe a veil of that kind would he used in some sort of traditional dress, maybe for dance, but I've never been made aware of that, so I wouldn't bet on it.

I'm going to be honest I have no idea why that sort of veil was used here. It seems rooted in a different sort of thing (think those "belly dancer" Halloween costumes). I'm a bit at a loss but if feels nasty nonetheless. My best guess is (besides the obvious "hide the face" plot point) it was drawn to make him look more feminine. Because Comedy.

My final point: the "Romani fortune teller stereotype" is old, shitty, and insulting. Dukering (the ability to tell fortunes) is a real practice. Some of my own family even practiced it before they refused to let their children practice any Romani culture at all (which is another story altogether). It doesn't sit right with me. Dressing a gadje man in a traditional headscarf, a feminine veil, and having him pretend to read palms and make Tarot puns feels gross. Romani culture is not a costume. Romani culture is not a joke.

They could have done anything else with this scene. They could have had him wear a big fake beard and a long coat and have him pretend to be a magician. They literally used the Eddini pun it was right fucking there. Instead, they chose to once again make Romani the butt of their jokes, intentionally or not. Considering the way they've treated Romani in the past, I don't think they even care.

So a couple of my points may slightly be misinformed, so if anyone has any corrections for me please DM. I'm still trying to learn the best I can.

[TBATF Bullshit] I found it. I fucking found it. They may have nuked the tumblr but some insta posts are still up and at em. I got all that I need. All the antiziganism from the steamboys au documented (I hope). Also got two fucking "native costumes" too. I finally have more proof. I'm gonna put it in a post and let it loose soon. Hopefully this will be a wake-up call for some. They can't squirm their way out of this.

That was uncomfortable and disgusting, but I hope this can be used to hold them accountable for their shitty behavior.

So talking about both the Eddsworld Fan Movie and tbatf with @matts-flushed-keys has made me realise two things Tbatf is written like how you would stereotypically expect edgy teenage boys to make an Eddsworld fanwork(everybody is 10 times more assholish than canon somehow, edgy for edgyness sake, gore and immature handling of actual sensitive issues, trying to tell a dark/serious story while incompetently showing in humour with abysmal timing, misogyny and objectification of almost every female character save for the one lesbian in charge)

While the fan movie is what you would expect from like, fandom moms almost(sappy/sentimental scenes, the gang is all uwu bean never done nothing wrong, Matt is yaoi gay coded, weird homophobia, nothing happens and Paul is a "bad boy" who actually saves the day and bonds with the gang somehow enough to take the bullet for them)

Where am I going with this? I'm not sure, but it's something I've noticed regardless.

I just wanted to give everyone a friendly reminder that tbatf's creators have exhibited racıst behaviors towards Romani including use of the g-slur and making their Romani character [SteamBoys AU Tom] a walking stereotype (ie a liar, a beggar, and a con-artist), which does nothing but reinforce ideas that have led to rampant hatred, police brutality, and even genocıde in Europe. Because these quirky tropes have always been funny, right?*

Bonus points for "native costumes"

Being self aware (in the first one) doesn't make you cute and quirky, love! ♡ You still drew that shit and allowed it in your shitty comic!

Don't support those freaks. Please.

I was scrolling through someone's Eddsworld tag and came across this.

This looks so much like those racist "g*psy fortune teller" costumes, and it makes me even more angry at these women.**

Edd then goes on to do a "palm reading" and make tarot puns. I absolutely could not believe what I was seeing, but at the same time I wasn't suprised. If it were anyone else, I would have just assumed it was poor taste and ignorance. I would have tried to correct them and spread awareness of why stereotypes like this are wrong, but given their track record, I don't believe they care in the slightest.

And before you give me any shit, back in the day my own family ran the local circus AND some of them were dukers (able to read fortunes). I know what I'm talking about. I know what is and isn't harmful. Drawing a white man in a Romani "fortune telling" outfit isn't harmless.
