“One of the things we talk quite a bit about in TBTE is the idea that while we can’t control everything in the environment when training a dog we can control how to respond to the dog - and for us that will always mean prioritizing helping a dog recover emotionally from a trigger. So, while we can’t control whether there’s a thunderstorm or a motorcycle revving its engine, we can help the dog calm down by using rewards, relaxation therapies, and complex language. Soon enough the dog learns to calm down on its own and begins to view the world differently.
The power is not in dominating and correcting the dog. The power is in recognizing that the dog is having difficulty and offering an emotional “boost” to help them through it and helping them gain optimism that the next time something challenging happens they can count on you - and that soon enough they won’t need your help at all.”
