“Why is this gay character so effete? What an offensive stereotype!”
In an alternative universe where the coming out scene didn’t happen “lol no man who’s that effete and into fashion is straight! He’s gay fight me!”
Alternatively, in a universe where McGregor isn’t effete at all “What straight-gay nonsense is this!?”
“Why is him being gay only mentioned in one scene!? Boo!”
In an alternative universe where it’s brought up several times “Why is his character so defined by his sexuality!? Just fucking treat him like a normal person!”
“Why doesn’t he get a boyfriend!?”
In an alternative universe where he does “Why does gay characters need a romantic subplot?! Why does he have to prove his gayness!?”
And remember, a boyfriend would be judged based on all the same things and then some. Masculine boyfriend? “Are they implying gay couples need a male/female styled dynamic!?” Feminine boyfriend? “So gay men can’t be masculine!?”
These are all complaints I’ve seen a million times about other gay characters. It’s rigged. There’s no winning.
