It's impossible to understand The Lord of the Rings without understanding the concept of survivor's guilt.
Before the war, Tolkien and his three closest friends formed a society, the T.C.B.S., dedicated to art and changing the world. Two were killed at the Somme. The third died shortly after. Tolkien alone was left to carry the weight of their shared dreams.
The desperate, unbreakable bond of the Fellowship isn't just a fantasy trope. It's a memorial. It's a man trying to recapture, on the page, the brotherhood he lost in the mud. It's the engine of the entire legendarium.
