The Tea Hut's First Outing!
On Saturday 28th June our Tea Hut had its first outing at Armed Forces Day in City Park in the centre of Bradford. Over 300 hot drinks were served; a good number but not as much as the 2,000,000 hot drinks served weekly in YMCA Tea Huts during World War One!
The Tea Hut had its second outing at the Yorkshire Wartime Experience on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th July, serving 450 hot drinks and sharing the message of the YMCA’s work during World War One to many of the approximately 10,000 visitors to the event.
The building of the Tea Hut was a collaborative effort between Bradford YMCA and Carlton Bolling College, with young people from local group Camouflage Crew helping to run the Tea Hut along with staff and volunteers.
Dave West, CEO of Bradford YMCA, said: “Bradford YMCA's Tea Hut project proved a great success and was very popular with visitors to the Armed Forces Day event on Saturday 28th June. It showcased one of the YMCA's roles during WW1 and demonstrated our continuing role supporting and involving young people in Bradford.”
The Tea Hut will be having yet another outing, this time to Undercliffe Cemetery on Friday 11th June, 9:30 am – 3:30 pm and Saturday 12th June, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm. The YMCA was the largest non-military organisation involved in the War effort, providing shelter and home comforts from the home front to the front line. The aim of the Tea Hut, part of our Tea and Remembrance project, is to raise awareness and commemorate this great history.
