If you have been following this blog, by now you probably saw the tendency of me sharing my morning tea recipes. Ahem. Herbal tea recipes! Yep, there is a difference between tea and herbal tea. In the country where I am from, we use tea for all types of tea, including green, black, herbal, etc. I did a small research on the matter and here I will share what I have learned from it.
Tea refers to a hot beverage that is prepared by infusing or brewing the dried leaves of the plant Camellia sinensis.
Herbal tea refers to a beverage made from steeping or boiling herbs such as chamomile, mint, and other herbs that you can easily grow yourself in your garden. These teas are also known as a tisane, botanical, and herbal infusion.
To prepare a herbal tea you should:
Pour hot water over the plant matter (such as dried leaves, berries, or roots).
Wait for a period of time (which is called steeping).
Remove the plant matter before drinking.
Avoid using aluminium pots for the brewing process. Certain herbs react with the metal and create a toxic beverage.
My suggestion here is to brew the water separately and then add it to the plant matter and leave it steep.
When making herbal tea pay attention to timing. It is key to getting just the right flavor out of your tea.
Taste is subjective. Just because people recommend you brew certain tea for a certain time, it does not mean that this is how you will like it. For a stronger brew, I usually use more leaves rather than leaving the tea in the pot longer than recommended.
