In part 1 we looked at a child's motivations for learning an instrument and why it's important to build your teaching style from these foundations. In this blog we'll look at the how's of music teaching. (The popular word for this is 'pedagogy'. I don't like it. As well as not being able to pronounce it, I personally find it directly contradicts point 6!) 

5. Teach music as a language

Lets deal with the whole music reading thing. Did you learn to read and write before you learned to speak? How was your handle on the rules of grammar when you were 5 years old and could already express yourself through speech very well indeed? It made sense back in the day because we didn’t have recordings. The distribution channel for getting new music was manuscript. This hasn't been the case for close to 100 years now!

Imagine how easy it should be to learn a language with 12 words. Victor Wooten sums it up nicely here. Teach them to listen, copy, make mistakes and learn by doing.  

6. Make it as simple and accessible to as many as possible

This is where the art comes in with your personal communication skills. You have to be a chameleon and adpat your style based on who’s in front of you, how they learn and what motivates them. Ask yourself the following questions: Who’s in front of you? What do you need to tell them to get them to progress? How is their worldview different from the person next to them? How do they best learn? How can you setup activities to support that? Why are they playing in the first place? Which words tap into this motivation and which words put them off? Find the most direct route to your result and remove barriers wherever possible.

7. Build The Whole Person

If you’ve nailed the first six points, this one should take care of itself but its worth being mindful of all the time. The number of adults who tell me terrible stories about their experience with a music teacher still surprises me. You’re in a position to have a major influence on your students self confidence, (fragile), concentration, social skills and creative personality. They are incredibly sensitive to the subtlties in your communication, and that’s more than just the words you say, its also tone of voice, body language and your aura. You also help to teach them persistence (not giving up), leadership skills (how to communicate and the value of teamwork) and concentration (learning new skills). So be proud of your influence and step up to the mark.

It requires us to think quite differently from how we were likely taught and really get inside the head of people who have totally different experiences from our own.
