How It feels like secretly dating a man in his 30s
as a teen
While no one knows
relax once in a while

nobody really talks about the reality of growing up in a homophobic upbringing. and i am not talking about a rural christian town where you can take a train and go into the city. i'm talking about a proper homophobic place, where hate grows like the mold on abandoned bathroom walls.
there wasn't exactly am open city, or a neighbouring country that you could escape to.
they weren't outright chanting "fuck queer people", no, they didn't speak of them, which was worse in some ways. there wasn't the word "queer" or "gay". there was only what translated into "faggot" in english. that was the word that was used. if it was used.
i remember a little girl who looked over my brother's shoulder, the youtube kids he was watching had slides in rainbow colours. she turned to her mum, flabbergasted. "maman, that's the flag of people who are not kind!"
we weren't taught what queer is, not really. when we asked what that flag stood for, it was "for very bad people". and when we asked what "faggot" meant, we were met with silence.
the first time i've seen a pride parade was when i was 12, with unrestricted instagram access, i engaged with foreign english content as i was forced into private english classes since i was 10.
the first time i realised what queer meant, i was at that age too.
and i didn't hate queer people.
your upbringing isn't an excuse.
unlearn your hate.
stop saying that slur.
stop rolling your eyes.
and most importantly, remove that mold and prevent it from growing on your bathroom walls again.
