😂 One of my students knows me too well.
My (Pre-K) co-teacher and I have recently instituted our “Acts of Kindness” system. For every act of kindness that we see our class, as a whole/majority, complete, we give them a sticker on a big board in the classroom. It doesn’t seem like much, but they received their first one today. They got it for being the best they’ve been during circle time since school has started. When I say I have never seen bigger smiles or heard happier giggles in my life, I mean it.
This is the kind of thing I needed today, after feeling so discouraged. Seeing how proud they were of themselves reminded me why I do what I do. After they got their star, I told them “pat yourself on the back, give yourself a hug, and high five yourself” they all did it with joy. One of my kids told me to do it too and I legit almost cried. I love my kiddos and I feel a little lighter after today.
6th graders are wild.
I assigned an extra credit crossword puzzle and it was due by 11:59 tonight. One kid literally turned it in at 11:57 with the comment "BOOM BABY JUST IN TIME".
I think he's going places.
Just in case you need to hear this today: I love you, I'm proud of you, you are amazing, and I could not be prouder of all that you have accomplished. Being a teacher is so hard especially during these unprecedented times where noone seems to know what the hell is going on. You've got this, you are amazing. <3 your favorite squishy stress ball!
It’s meeee! But that’s not snow! It’s COVID exposure bc no one fucking cares about preventing the spread of this “oh it doesn’t kill young people” disease 🙃WHEEEEE🙃
working with young children requires extreme caution, care, and effort. on days when your student is feeling off, it’s down right exhausting.
yet, there are a few moments in which you see your efforts bring some growth in a child, making it all worth it.
Story time??? (Teacher post)
POV you are a 22 year old fresh out of college ready to teach AP lang to a bunch of juniors for ur second year. All of the girl students love u and u have noticed this and u love it. Ur young and have tattoos after all. U think ur hot stuff and its clear in how u carry urself. Ur feelin good feelin confident
You assign seats every few weeks bc of ur funky fresh teaching strategy and at one point u sit one student at the front. U think nothing of it. Also u assume thay this student is a girl and will love u like all the other girls do. Whatevs. The problems begin bc this FUCKING student wont stop whispering dumb jokes under their breath and almost making u lose ur entire shit in front of the class which upsets u bc u want to be taken seriously but u cant call them out bc u want to seem cool and fun. U also cant move them right away cuz itll ruin ur teaching thing ur doing.
Eventually u move them to the back of the room and away from u. No shave november happens. U participate. Whatever. It ends. U shave ur beard but decide to have fun and give urself a handlebar mustache. The next day this student enters the classroom, takes one look at you, and erupts into laughter.
They sit and hide their head in their arms but every time they calm down and lift their head and see you the laughter begins again. Their laughter dies after ten minutes but theyre stifling giggles the whole lesson. U avoid eye contact with them. U decide that u do not like this student and start grading them more harshly than everyone else.
It comes time for finals and since u like being cool and fun u dont wanna do a normal paper and pencil final. So u assign a group presentation. This fucking student does a slide in their group's powerpoint about Mark Twain... Except they exclusively refer to him as Twain the Mark Twainson and Twain the Rock Markson and only have this image of him on the slide:
Apparently the other group members also didn't do satisfactory work so u give the project a D which slides this student's final grade to an F
one of the hardest things about this shutdown as an educator is that i can’t just look a student in the eye and ask them what the crap they were thinking when they were writing an essay and have them fix it. now it’s like a seven step day and a half process to do that.
