on today’s episode of things i can’t believe my kids just said:

“the bible is full of shakespeare. that’s why i hate it”

when i asked her to clarify, her twin explained,

“we have an old kind of bible, that’s why”

NEVER LET THEM GUESS YOUR AGE!

 I would add this as a lesson that I learned the hard way. Now guys I am 23 years old. Kids being kids raise their hands and ask: “Miss?, Miss? How old are you?” I just told them to guess. WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE. Apparently I am 35 or even 40 [slaps palm on forehead] One kid got it spot on, but honestly. Don’t ask them to play any guessing game ever. They will lose.

A former student sent me this books as a birthday gift a few years after his graduation. It originally belonged to his grandmother, and he wanted me to have as a thank you. It is one of the most thoughtful gifts I have ever received, and holds a special place in my home library.

In this class, art and creativity play a big part of the learning experience! At art class this week the children created these breathtaking mosaics. They worked so hard and took forever to finish as they really wanted it to turn out well. Aren't they lovely?

We are looking at letter sounds and double consonant blends SS and CK and finding where they go in our vocabulary words. They thought it was like a treasure hunt and were so excited to see who found the sound first.

I used a bit of free time this afternoon to sort some old photos while listening to records. Ironically as Rod Stewart’s “Every Picture Tells a Story” played in the background, I stumbled on this photo. Several years ago I taught an Invertebrate Zoology course and required an invertebrate collection. Students worked in pairs or solo (their choice) and had to submit properly curated specimens with a point structure that encouraged diversity. Seeing this photo with Stewart’s euphonious voice in my ear brought back many fond memories. 

The pair of students who submitted this fantastic project left a lasting impression on me. They attended my weekend camping expedition full of curiosity and a not so subtle sense of exploration. They carefully kept records of their acquisitions and experiences in their field journals. They also came up with the clever flow chart structure visible in the photo to demonstrate their understanding of their specimens’ taxonomic affinities.The duo also attended an expedition to canyon country in the American Southwest that will live on in my memory as one of my favorite experiences.

Every picture does tell a story, and this one, for me, tells a story of how thankful I feel to have encountered such wonderful students in my short time as an educator.
