I was teaching a lesson the other day and my student (7) saw a trombone case in the room. He asked what was in the "weird looking suitcase". He was far too distracted by it to continue warming up, so I answered.
Me: a trombone
Him: a what?
Me: it's like a trumpet, but bigger and with a slide instead of buttons
Him: I don't get it.
So I pulled up a pic on my phone, and he was like, "How do they play it without hitting themselves in the face?"
I tries to explain but failed, so I pulled up a search of people actually playing the trombone.
One of the first pictures was of Trombone Shorty (really cool jazz artist), and my student went, "Wait a second! Is that Martin Luther King jr?"
Me: no, buddy, that is simply a black man
I had to hold in my laughter for the rest of the lesson.
This kid is always saying off-handed funny things without realizing. Honestly, he's one of my favorite students.
