I Live To Be A Future Educator

The PPST has taught us that there are standards that teachers should know to be able to achieve quality performance, improve student learning outcomes, and provide quality education that is inclusive of all learners. Future educators need commitment, patience, and hard effort to obtain these qualities, but if we set our minds to it, we will succeed.

I, as a future educator, aspire to be someone who doesn’t dogmatically spoon-feed knowledge and values to the learners. I value an inclusive classroom design in which I am more of a facilitator than a dictator and see how my students flourish working on their own or in groups. The way I can be recognized as a true leader in education who initiates collaboration and puts the interests of the students first

There are stages we need to progress through in the teaching profession, where you start as a beginner teacher until you reach the potential of becoming a distinguished one. While I am accomplishing my journey, I would like my students to remember me as someone innovative and committed to my duty as a teacher. My mission is to motivate my students to learn and realize their full potential via the use of diverse approaches that excite their creativity and morality.

To work towards this aspiration, I should abide by the laws that expect me to perform and deliver well in my field of teaching. I should never be afraid to experiment with new teaching methods in order to improve student learning. Not only that, I should aim for an inclusive classroom design so that I can reach my students more and see them from a broader perspective.

Teaching as a Profession and Critical Race Theory

Chart #7, entitled “Most Teachers Say They Talk About Historical and Present-Day Racism, But Some Aren’t Sure if Systemic Racism Exists”, resonated with me as an ESL teacher. I was not surprised to hear that 23% of teachers do not believe in systemic racism, but I would be curious to know how this figure varies by student populations. I would imagine that teachers who primarily teach white students would be ignorant to the structural discrepancies that are often more apparent in diverse schools. 

Virginia is one of the states that has banned critical race theory in schools, and this legislation affected the books that my co teachers and I chose for our novel study during the 2021-2022 school year. 

I teach collaborative ESL English, so about 75% of the students in each of my classrooms are English Learners. The vast majority of my EL students come from Spanish-speaking households, so my co teachers and I incorporate books with Hispanic main characters into our curriculum. This past year, my co teachers and I considered teaching Efren Divided by Ernesto Cisneros as a read aloud. This book follows a Mexican-American boy who fights to support his family and get his mother home after she is deported to Mexico. When we began lesson planning for the book, we realized that the primary conflict is Efren vs. US Immigration Policy. Immigration officers are the antagonists in this story, and we did not feel confident that the county would support us if a parent complained about the book. Ultimately, we opted to read Epic Fail of Arturo Zamora, which discusses conflicts related to gentrification and heritage. The antagonist is personified as a cartoonish landlord rather than a political figure. Our novel study choice was greatly influenced by our concerns regarding parent reception. 

Critical race theory ban threatens the professionalism of public educators by limiting teacher autonomy and the exercise of discretion. The professional code of ethics calls me to commit myself to encouraging positive development for my students by creating a classroom environment that helps diverse learners thrive. How does one connect curriculum to underserved populations in a meaningful way without touching antiracist themes?

Social Status of Teachers in Modern Education

Teachers are arguably the most important members of our society. They give children purpose, set them up for success as citizens of our world, and inspire in them a drive to do well and succeed in life. The children of today are the leaders of tomorrow, and teachers are that critical point that makes a child ready for their future. Teachers can act as a support system that is lacking elsewhere in students’ lives. They can be a role model and an inspiration to go further and to dream bigger. They hold students accountable for their successes and failures and good teachers won’t let their talented students get away with not living up to their full potential.

 Teachers of all walks of life and subjects have the ability to shape opinions and help form ideas about society, life and personal goals. Teachers can also expand students’ limits and push their creativity.

 Teaching is a tough job, but it is one where you can make the most impact in another person’s life. If you’re thinking of becoming a teacher, here are even more reasons why you should invest in a teaching career. Teachers are the ultimate role models for students. The fact that students come into contact with many different types of teachers in their academic career means that more likely than not, there will be a teacher that speaks to them.

 The teacher-student connection is invaluable for some students, who may otherwise not have that stability. Teachers will stay positive for their students even when things can seem grim. A great teacher always has compassion for their students, understanding of their students’ personal lives, and appreciation for their academic goals and achievements. Teachers are role models for children to be positive, always try harder, and reach for the stars.

Ethical And Disciplined

One characteristic of the teaching profession involves ethics and discipline. Teachers teach ethical values which make students more disciplined. Ethical behavior encourages students to know what is bad or good for them.
