Acting my age?
Kicking off Homecoming week with "decades day." Best quote so far - "My sister helped me with my 00's look because she's like, REALLY old. She's like 25!"
N.B. - I’m 31 and loving it, but I very much encouraged her NOT to say this to other teachers. I may also have signed her up for dodgeball...
In this week’s Patreon post, I wanted to present this short teaching story that I wrote called "The Pegasus and the Centaur.” It is based on a story that was told to me by Brent Dill. The premise is that a Pegasus is trying to understand how to understand how to fit into the society of horses, because the world at large is set up for horses. Horses are the majority, and those on the fringes are not treated well, and certainly not thought of as "normal." So, the pegasus sets out to ask the question of a unicorn, another pegasus, and a centaur. The answers they provide are not necessarily easy, or possible at all. This was from back in March when we had a snow storm.
Memories
Haven’t posted here in a long time.
Considering how the past can sometimes jump up and bite you when you least expect it, I reconnected with some old friends this past week. Some I haven’t spoken too in quite a few years.
I point this out because today at work, I was speaking to some of the students in my class. They asked me a pretty loaded question, “What did you want to be when you were a kid?” I thought for a moment and responded, “Well I can tell you when I knew what I wanted to do with my life.” They asked me to tell the story, so here goes.
I have wanted to be a teacher since 1997, in the 7th grade. Growing up I had a plethora of learning disabilities, and suffered at the hands of teachers who were unwilling to see it as anything but just “another stupid kid.”
I can pinpoint the 7th grade, because I had a teacher who actually broke through my disabilities and made learning more than just a tedious task. He made it fun. I remember sitting and reading some of the stories, because it was an English class, and being excited to go to class the next day and discuss it with him and my peers. It was in those moments where I decided I wanted to help kids just like he helped me.
The students asked then, “What was his name?” and it struck me. I couldn’t remember! I thought hard, and decided that it was time to pull out the dusty old yearbook, only to realize all of this took place practically 20-years ago. Safe to say that I found his name, and will continue looking for him on the internet. I’d love to tell him that he inspired me to follow the career path that I am on, much to the chagrin of my mother (who was a teacher for 35 years, and my biggest supporter!)
That is all.
Shamaster and teaching
Shamaster says (OOC) 'Forever ago, during my very first field experience.' Shamaster says (OOC) 'I was working with the kids who were having a more difficult time than the others.' Shamaster says (OOC) 'Working with the writings.' Shamaster says (OOC) 'Kindergartners take... forever (as a generous term) to organize into a line, get into the bathroom and get out to the yard.' Jacen nods. Shamaster says (OOC) 'So I got permission from my ct to hold the kid I was working with back.' Shamaster says (OOC) 'we could finish what we were doing, make it to and through the bahtroom and be out before the others.' Shamaster says (OOC) 'While the others were lining up, this little girl (youngest in the class) came over to us.' Shamaster says (OOC) 'and politely reminded us that "it's time to line up now".' Shamaster says (OOC) 'I made a mistake and told her "it's okay sweetie, we're allowed to stay here"' Shamaster says (OOC) 'her face turned bright red.' Shamaster says (OOC) 'tears welled up in her eyes.' Shamaster says (OOC) 'and she screamed at us.' Shamaster says (OOC) 'IT'S NOT OKAY!' Shamaster says (OOC) 'IT'LL NEVER BE OKAY!' Shamaster says (OOC) 'This is my first time doing work in an actual classroom.' Shamaster says (OOC) 'this child has gone from happy and smileing to crying and screaming in 2 seconds over nothing.' Shamaster says (OOC) 'I am like stunned into silence.' Rachel says (OOC) 'Did she think she was in trouble?' Shamaster says (OOC) 'No no, Rach.' Shamaster says (OOC) 'The rules.' Shamaster says (OOC) 'Rules are very very very important to Kindergartners, especially the less mature ones.' Shamaster says (OOC) 'I was an adult, being introduced as "teacher "' Shamaster says (OOC) 'and I was BREAKING the rules.' Shamaster says (OOC) 'A teacher wasn't following the rules.' Funslash says (OOC) 'All kindergartners are lawful stupid.' Shamaster says (OOC) 'it was like her world had been shattered.'
Keep two pieces of paper in your pockets at all times. One that says, “I am a speck of dust.” And the other, “The world was created for me.”
