I inherited this one teacher from A in the Great April Teacher Changeover that at first A was like “She’s awesome!” and then “Well, she was terrible but I whipped her into shape.” She’s been awesome for me so far, even remembering to plan with me without the Eigo Tantou’s prodding and spending enough time so we can brainstorm TOGETHER and discuss what would work best and so far I have been SO EXCITED for every class I teach with her because we both know what needs to happen.
She’s also been strongly hinting at taking coffee breaks together, and I completely missed out on the first few hints since I don’t drink coffee and tend to reject offers of it without thinking. But today I took her up on it and suffered through drinking coffee for her company.
I feel like it’s a really interesting relationship because I get the vibe she kind of wants to badmouth A, but I can’t tell for sure, because it’s just all these oh-so-Japanese comments that are never really straightforward, just weirdly bringing up how busy A was, and how nice her predecessor was. I always try to shift the convo at least to “Your last school was really tough, huh?” because I think that might be the main reason for all of this. Karakuwa is paradise compared to the daily fights in some of A’s classes.
But I think that really shows how fickle the Japanese school environment can be for finding the right balance for team-teaching. Whether it’s language barriers in communication, lack of confidence on the Japanese teacher’s part, or just finding the right time to get everything done.
Anyway, I’m really glad this teacher came to Karakuwa. I think our team-teaching together has been really good for both of us. And I’m glad I finally picked up on the coffee time hints today. It ended with me angsting about my upcoming driving test on Thursday and half the staff room cheering me on for success. It was the sort of faculty room comradery I’ve been really missing lately since everyone’s been so busy with school sport events while I’ve been so very not busy.
Hopefully I can ride this vibes for the next few days of ES before test day.
