I can't decide which I'm enjoying more right now: responses to the Glasgow Willy Wonka experience or the fairy/walrus debate. Maybe the Wonka organizers should have just had a walrus show up and blow everybody's minds?

Need a team walrus or team fairy shirt
Is no one going to address the fact that fairies are far too light to audibly knock on the door? does anyone care? just me?
My personal take is that if a fairy is at the door, fairies are real. And if fairies are real, it’s not that surprising for one to be at your door.
If a walrus is at your door there is no world in which that isn’t incredibly surprising, even if it got there through natural means.
on the debate: personally, a walrus knocking on my door would be MUCH more surprising. if a fairy knocks on my door, that just means fae exist. i don't feel like straight up magic is a requirement for fae existing, it's just a surprise discovery of a new species.
if a FUCKIJG WALRUS KNOCKS ON MY DOOR, I HAVE TO REEVALUATE MY ENTIRE UNDERSTANDING OF WALRUSES.
THIS IS NOT HOW A WALRUS IS SUPPOSED TO WORK
To me, a sentient creature (even a seemingly mythological sentient creature) knocking on the door is less surprising than a twelve foot semi-aquatic mammal with no legs or fists.
At least…at least the fairy would know why it was THERE and would understand that it was entreating entry to a dwelling, whereas I can only assume an amount of bafflement on the part of the walrus which would preclude an understanding of such etiquette?
Maybe if the walrus was wearing a hat. That would at least be a signal that the walrus has some kind of business and I wouldn’t have to make a judgement call RE who do you actually contact in a landlocked province about an unexpected walrus situation.
I propose we put a hat on the walrus, and run the poll again.
I was discussing the Walrus vs. Fairy problem with @magpie-atelier and what we realized is that it’s not just probability vs. possibility that makes the walrus more surprising
It’s also that the walrus would be frightening. Like, a walrus is a huge wild animal. It can kill you. No human could overpower it, and few people would have the tools or knowledge necessary to relocate it. And how are you going to communicate your problem to someone who can help you relocate the walrus? Are you going to call animal control and tell them there is a walrus on your front porch. No you don’t know how it got there but you are not equipped to move it. Do you think they will come check it out or do you think they will hang up
A fairy, even if they don’t want to leave, can probably be either physically overpowered or negotiated with. The walrus is just a guy. A guy you can’t talk to or move. A guy who is probably distressed and far away from home and who could easily crush you by accident
Also loud
asked the fairy vs. walrus question to my class. regretted asking the fairy vs. walrus question to my class.
(the verdict was fairy, although it was heavily contested by myself and two students)
