Night swimming with manta rays is like sky diving with spaceships - so peaceful, so gentle. 🌌 The manta ray, commonly confused with the sting ray that killed Steve Irwin, do not pose harm to humans. They do not have barbs, a venomous stinger or teeth and love to simply swoop around under lights at night filtering plankton for their dinner. Even though there are increasing international policies set to protect manta rays, over the past decade mantas have had an elevated risk of extinction due pollution, plastic, fishing nets, and harvesting their gill rakers for Chinese medicine. Similar to the dolphin slaughter in the Taiji cove in Japan, the Indonesian village of Lamakera is considered the world’s largest manta slaughter site, killing over 1,000 mantas in a single season and selling them to China. WildAid helped to successfully secure full national protection for manta rays, establishing Indonesia as the world’s largest manta sanctuary - but it could be too late as the process to prevent manta fishing is not as simple as passing a protection act. If there continues to be demand for Chinese medicine using mantas, then supply will continue - legal or not. @wildaid is an organization dedicated to the preservation of Manta Rays and their research shows Mantas are the slowest to reproduce of all sharks and rays. Manta Rays only produce an estimate 5-15 offspring per year and the threat to their extinction is rapidly escalating. 🔦 HOW YOU CAN HELP: Do not buy any products made from manta and mobula gills.
