#Repost @teamsharkwater @download.ins --- Happy World Oceans Day Friends, Washington; We are excited to announce – on today of all days, that the U.S. Senate has passed the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act (S.1106). Now it’s back to the House for ratification, which is expected soon; the House has demonstrated strong support for the Shark Fin Sales Elimination act, passing it 301 to 107 in 2019. 77% of oceanic sharks and rays are endangered and on the IUCN’s Red List, so this is a huge success. The bill bans the selling, buying and trade of shark fins and products that contain shark fins and will also shut down the shipping --- the US is a major transportation hub for shark fins. Rob Stewart was a biologist, conservationist, photographer, author, and filmmaker who had a passion for the ocean and is someone that many look up to. He is very relatable and a good mentor. Within the first 5 minutes of his first major film “Sharkwater,” I had never related more to something in my life. This quote above is one of the most humbling quotes. We as humans haven’t existed on Earth for even a small fraction of time compared to sharks. Sharks are so intelligent and we’re slaughtering them minute by minute every day. Why do we humans let greed overcome us and not the good? Rob Stewart is an inspiring human being and we all need to be and think more like him. Rob’s legacy lives on. Credit to from @pashence_marie (@get_regrann) - Luck was on our side during day two of our research expedition with @finsattached. @j.kowitz and I were diving and exploring the beautiful waters of Costa Rica when greeted by this beautiful juvenile whale shark.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Whale sharks are considered endangered by the IUCN. It’s estimated that there are only about 7,100 whale sharks in the ocean. Sadly, even the whale shark, the worlds largest shark is a victim of by-catch from trolling nets, also in some areas they are still hunted for their fins. Due to having the largest fins of all sharks it holds an extremely high price at market.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I want to take a second to thank all the non-profit organizations like @finsattached that pour their heart and soul into protecting our oceans. I have been speaking with people about sharks ending up in makeup and a high percentage of them thought that sharks for Squalane/Squalene were taken from bycatch, but this is a false assumption. Three million deep sea sharks are targetted and killed just for their livers each year. These are threatened species and if somehow the livers were taken from sharks in bycatch...it would be better but even then, there's nothing sustainable about killing sharks. · · ❎ Did you know that it takes 6 000 sharks to create one ton of Squalene/Squalane? The global demand for this oil is 1 000 - 2 000 tons per year! Don't be fooled into thinking Squalane is sustainable and plant derived because it is created by using shark liver oil(Squalene). If the sourcing of the Squalane is not revealed then it is shark-derived. Please speak up for sharks!! ❎ · · 33 % of open-water sharks are facing extinction and if we dont change the way we life our life, we could destroy the very existence of an animal we cannot afford to lose. Educate yourself, your family and friends.
