re the post i reblogged about celtic languages. reminds me of how sometimes online i encounter people who seem to think most people who speak celtic languages are pagans or polytheists of some kind and BOY they will get a shock if they ever actually go to those areas and talk to people irl

talking about doing some kind of diploma or translation course to improve my written language skills with the intention of writing gay smut in one of my target languages and how this would definitely not be a module on offer

so i'm trying out the app "say something in..." for welsh and it essentially gives you phrases to repeat and combine in different ways, interspersed with a nice welsh man telling you facts about brains and how they learn, reminding you that your brain is amazing and that you definitely can learn to speak welsh, and encouraging you to "learn a little bit more welsh for me"

it's very different from the duolingo shame/guilt motivation and also i have to say. i don't personally have a praise kink but if you do and you want a gentle-voiced welsh man to tell you you're doing really well all the time. well

the thing about reading in welsh is that it makes me realise how rapidly my welsh is catching up with my irish and also makes me suspect my irish is not as good as i have thought sometimes

i FEEL like i am at a considerably higher level in irish because i can hold substantial conversations in it on complex topics. however a lot of the lower level material is missing and i constantly forget grammar or sentence structures that I have learned repeatedly, and i can only talk about certain topics. whereas with welsh i am only at A2 level, so i cannot hold a conversation entirely in welsh. but after less than a year of learning i am able to read easy books in a way that i couldn't until I had been actively learning irish for four years (and until 6-9 years after i started learning it at all, cos i started a few times and then stopped)

a major part of this is also a discrepancy in resources. there are welsh books for learners that correspond exactly to my level, so I'm able to find things i can read quite easily, and things that are the right amount of challenge for me to help me improve. for Irish I was muddling through and piecing resources together a lot, which is true of the whole journey

so. to be honest. as i look ahead at the B1 welsh resources etc. i do feel like it's not going to be long before it catches up with my irish. and it is very likely it will overtake it just because there are so few resources for Irish at the kind of B2 level. everything seems to be for either beginners or fluent speakers. upper intermediate is such a dead zone, especially if you don't live in ireland, and I've been stuck in that dead zone for so long that I am starting to slip backwards into lower intermediate again
