I find very few moments in life where I fully grasp the magnitude and profound impact of events or places in the moment I'm present for. It often sinks in as an afterthought later on. When I've had time to simmer with it and be introspective. Read a little, find out some more. But Berlin is full of places and rich history that command that instantly. The Wall is one of those places. Just to sit there and reflect on the two worlds that once lived on either side of this structure. The actions that altered the course of history and the world we live in today. The iconic images of young Germans perched on these very slabs, fading in and out of the present. Fast forward back to reality... on one side of the wall sits the Mercedes Benz Arena. On the other an English guitarist plays his songs by the river and my phone buzzes. Even though I have him blocked, there's no escape.... "US Supreme Court gives go-ahead for Trump wall funding" It's painfully ironic....how the concept of making our world "Great Again" has shifted so drastically despite "lessons learned", "lest we forget" and the notion of "Never again". To go From "Tear down This wall" to "Build That Wall". The very same party.....no more than a few generations down the line... The Wall (part one) . Built in 1961 it would stand and hold Eastern Germans at bay from fleeing the communist side of Berlin until 1989. . There were two walls with a DMZ like perimeter in between them. Numerous checkpoints were set up that would allow 1) East Germans to go visit relatives that were West Germans (similar to how North and South Korea facilitate the visiting of familes). 2) Western tourists would be allowed to enter as long as they exchanged their West German Marks for East German Marks. This helped facilitate the growth of the East German Mark. . There is a path of bricks on the ground that twists and turns outlying the place where the wall once stood. You can walk the perimeter of it. In some of the pics, you can see where the path runs into where a metro station now stands. . This wall divided people physically and emotionally for decades. As we explored the Library today I was reminded of how important it is to teach our kids about history, no matter what your political preferences are, so we can learn from our mistakes and triumphs.
