Another time, another place, another life, he would have wanted nothing more than to collapse into her arms, thank her, finally let himself cry —

  (  He couldn't even do that anymore. Not without making a bloody mess, anyway.  )

But this wasn't another life, and Dabi wasn't about to show that much weakness. Even if this was just his mother, even if she had never meant him any harm.

Several heartbeats passed, before finally a sigh was offered, and he forced the habitual tension to leave his muscles. He couldn't talk her out of loving him, and honestly, he didn't want to. He just didn't know how to let her anymore, either.

   ❝ I know. I don't... understand it, but I know. ❞

Scarred arms crossed over his chest, subtly hugging himself, as he forced his thoughts to slow down, to focus on the moment.

   ❝ I love you too, Mom. ❞

@tears-like-snow​  did : Rei giggled softly as she lent down, cupped her baby boys cheeks and gently pressed her lips to his forehead in a loving kiss. "My hero." She murmured.

For someone who has such a cold quirk her actions couldn’t be any warmer . He felt as if he melts in her hands ,her love and gentle touch is all he needed to remind him he was safe , and that he was loved . How he had greatly missed the feeling . 

His tone is as soft as he remembered from his childhood ,her kiss takes him back to when he was truly her baby boy and would escape into his mothers arms to avoid the harsh reality of the world . Oh how he had missed have his mother around , how she seemed to light up the room , how she reminded him there were good moments in his childhood , sure not many, but with her they were all priceless . 

Lips curled into a smile at her words ,   ❝ And you’re mine . ❞

Is that the normal protocol ?? Well if his mother says so then it must be . 

He nods ,  now understanding and grasping the concept of these formality , ❝ Okay , I will try .❞ Although any kind of human interactions weren’t his specialty , and it seemed like he already hated him , so that could make things a bit harder ,  ❝ What am I suppose to do to make him like me ?? ❞   Hues look at his mother as he’s waiting for some wise words from her .

“...!” Without a hint of hesitation, almost by instinct, Inasa used Whirlwind to propel his way forward toward the falling woman with white hair. The boy was just doing some patrol for his internship, he wasn’t expecting to actually something like that to happen! And goddammit was he happy about it! Time to be a hero!!!!

Once he finally got within reach of the woman, in order to soften the landing, he promptly used the whirlwind to propel him upwards, making the older lady to fall on his arms. “GOTCHA MA’AM!!! You gotta be careful around windows!!!”

He knew that. But he wished there was. He wished it was as simple as solving a problem for one of his classes. A black and white equation that had a definite right answer. 

But of course, emotions were too messy to be sorted into something so clear-cut. 

The emotions he felt were contradictory and confusing. A part of him wanted to give up being so angry. It was only making him feel worse and he feared it would cause him to lose the rest of his family.

He was just so tired of being the only one fighting against the current his family seemed to want to flow in. He was the only one keeping them from being the happy family Fuyumi wanted so bad. 

It was him. 

His stubbornness. His anger. His hatred. 

His bitterness. His resentment. 

It was all him holding them back. 

And he was tired. 

Tired of having the same arguments with Fuyumi that ended with one or both of them in tears. 

Tired of avoiding the house and not being able to see Shouto because their father was there. 

But every time he saw him, he couldn’t stop the anger that boiled up in him. It raged and it tore at him and it was so very very exhausting.

His shoulders fall and he leans down to rest his arms on his thighs, hands pressing together between his legs. “I know...” he said with a heavy sigh, and looked down, closing his eyes for a moment, feeling the well of tears threatening to spill.

“I just want someone to tell me it’s okay to forgive him, that it’s not betraying Nii-chan’s memory to do so...”

“Mom, if you try to walk on it, you could make it worse,” he reminded her worriedly. He had been too slow to catch her when she lost her footing, but he could at least carry her so she didn’t hurt herself further.

His mother was light in his arms so he had little trouble navigating the halls of the hospital back to her room.

“Once we get back to your room, we can ice it and see how it feels afterwards,” he added with a small smile.

❝ Mom... ❞ He’d NEVER say it out loud but this was a little embarrassing. Though he wouldn’t really have to when the evidence made itself known in the slight tinge of pink on his cheeks and the way his gaze wandered off to the side and lips pursed in the slightest pout.

It WAS a little embarrassing... but at the same time he was grateful to be having this moment with his mom. After all of their time spent apart, Shouto wanted EVERY LITTLE BIT OF AFFECTION his mother had to give him when he was long starved of it in his childhood devoid of anything but harsh training and punishment dealt out by his father. Things were different now- things were SO MUCH BETTER now- but broken pieces remained which needed to be mended slowly but surely so even if this moment felt a little embarrassing, SHOUTO WOULD ACCEPT IT WHOLEHEARTEDLY.

He was no hero to her now, that much he thought so firmly, but some day he’d save her from this place. Then, and only then, would he think himself A TRUE HERO.
