Sometimes I think about how Rhett says he’s really the shy one out of the two of them. That he relies on Link a lot to help keep conversions in public. I think as a socially awkward person and one who is rather shy and soft spoken I get what he’s saying. Being shy it’s hard to keep conversations going without fear of “am I talking too much? too little? am I using the wrong tone of voice?” and finding someone who can help balance that out in you is hard. For Rhett, Link is the person who he finds it easier to talk with and in turn helps him talk to others. Growing up I had a friend who did that too but then we drifted apart and I never found another person to do that again. But now I have Nicole and I’ve realized I was so damn wrong. I had never had someone who understood me like Link understands Rhett. There’s a reason it works so well for them, Link able to fill in the words whenever Rhett can’t seem to and vice versa. It’s a matter of 2 things. Trust and Listening. They’ve been friends for long enough Link has learned how to figure out when Rhett is struggling with keeping the conversation. Knows when and when not to take over for him. Now that I have Nic I know the reasons why what Rhett and Link have in their friendship is so special. It’s years of building trust, years of listening to the other even if it means holding in your own excitement or sadness for a little bit longer. They’ve had years to prefect this and I’ve had 5 and a half to finally understand it.
