Trust me I understand how the algorithm is predatory. I know that the site is a wasteland anyway. But nothing makes me angrier than getting the “Oops! You missed a match!” Tinder notification.
It just short circuits my brain because the premise is that you’re constantly making active binary decisions to accept or reject. There’s no “oops!” The whole USP of the service is to preempt not having conversations with the people I’m not interested in. The entire point of the app is to miss a (non) match.
Trust me babe I’m already being SO generous with my right swipes. Gaslighting me into going on a date with the sewer monsters I left swiped may genuinely be a hate crime.
Maybe it’s the Tumblr brainrot speaking but they’d get so many more whales if the notification just flat out said “Hey Incel! How desperate are you? Get gold to find out”
The big tech bosses preach tech utopia as salvations for everything but the reality is far more dystopia.
We are constantly told that we are witnessing unprecedented innovation in Tech. We are told our problems will be solved by apps, electric cars or space exploration. Is this innovation truly liberating? Or does it serve to outsource labour and further consolidate power and money in the hands of the few?
The big tech bosses are anti-democratic, anti-social inclusions in terms of creating REAL meaning jobs for everyday person, more monopoly, more secretive, more centralised, more anti-regulated and they create global giant companies that do not respect users and consumers’ rights in terms of equal negotiation powers.
The dystopia future will be more and more people are living in a paranoma digital false reality as a digital slave with less social and economic equality.
My thesis is, therefore, that Stiegler is the key thinker of the contemporary media age by virtue of his techno-dystopian vision of our immersion in mass media -- his work throws the banality of our disaffection into relief and opens up a critical space for the reconstruction of valuable, durable objects that may re-enchant our dark world and save us from the horror of Einstein's Nightmare.
