The Technology Trap
Take a moment and think about all the objects around you. Whether you realize it or not, every man made object that you interact with shapes your life, and ultimately, who you are. How are you even reading this right now? From a computer? A phone? An iPod? What is powering that piece of technology? Who designed and assembled that technology? You probably don't know and probably never even thought twice about it.
The film called, "The Trigger Effect," is an eery awakening to the man made world we live in and depend on today. We as intelligent humans have learned to develop amazing technology at incredible speeds. While these technologies are created to make our lives easier, we're also digging ourselves into a deeper whole.
Think for a moment, what would you do if you were in an elevator and the power suddenly went out? You'd probably reach for your phone to use as a light source. Then, you'd most likely notice the emergency button, press it, and wait for the help to come to you. But what if help can't be reached? Do you know how an elevator works? Do you know how to climb out of the car and down the shaft? "Then I'll just use my phone to call for help." would probably be your next thought. But what if the power outage was much larger? Suppose the phone companies and towers went down, no signal or reception. Then what would you do? Panic? Pound on the doors and call for help? Or would you try and take on the situation yourself and escape?
This is the technological trap. We have become so heavily reliant on technology that we don't remember how to survive without it.
I'm sure most of us have seen some film or show that involved a post apocalyptic world where a band of survivors must establish themselves and thrive in their new, foreign home. But let's think again for a moment, how much of a struggle that would truly be.
First off, let's assume that there is no more electricity being generated - there aren't any people to work the power plants. That immediately rules out using your smart phone to contact people or use the internet. That means if you don't know something, you can't google it anymore. This would probably be one of the greater downfalls of our civilization. We rely so much on the internet for information that we don't bother to learn and memorize anything pertaining to basic survival. There's no need to. Until now.
So, we're in a city without power, running water, or internet. Where do we go? Do you have a map and know how to use it? Can you use a compus or the sun's position? How do we even get anywhere? Without gas, your car is worthless for transportation. You can walk or ride a bike, but that requires spending energy. Where are you going to get food for travel? Would you steal or kill for food?
The film plays up this scenario very well (minus the internet being an option, as the film was made in the 70s.) Suppose you were lucky enough to happen upon a farm. That's where food is grown, so you probably figure that's your best bet. But do you even know how to farm? Keep in mind, there's no power or fuel so you can't use a tractor or any sort of powered harvesting tools. Say it's an animal farm, at least you have meat. That is, if you are capable of slaughtering, gutting, and cooking and curing meat. And eventually, those animals will run out. Then what? Well, you have fields, but do you know how to grow crops? Do you know when to plant and when to harvest whatever it is you even found to plant in the first place? Chances are, you probably don't. And you can't google it either, can you?
Nothing in our cushioned, urban lives has ever prepared us for such a scenario. We are so dependent upon instant results and technology that we never felt the need to even think about such a situation. But maybe we should. A black out could happen at any second, for whatever reason. A plague could wipe out the majority of humanity and the survivors vulnerable and hopeless.
Think about it. Would you survive? Realistically? You can only depend on yourself and your knowledge and common sense. How far will that get you? Your ancestors did it, but can you?
Can you untangle yourself from the technological trap we've become so comfortable with?
