Expectations. No expectations of his love being received or returned. The softness in Ismark’s voice makes him want to cry, and not for the first time Ardan wonders what happened to this boy to make him so unsure of his worth. A hundred words rise to his tongue, pretty and fine and splendid as poetry. But not true. Putting a thing into verse doesn’t make it true or real. So Ardan swallows them, until only the plain and simple remain. Though the truth often resists both, it is a good place to start.
