Rogers to credit customers 5 days of service for outage

In its terms of service, Pavlović says Rogers has an elaborate limitation of liability clause, reducing its obligations on a number of fronts, including service outages.

Rogers Communications says it will credit its customers for five days of service following its massive network outage last week that affected cellular and internet service for millions of Canadians.

The outage, which started Friday and lingered for many into the weekend, also disrupted government services and payment systems, prompting criticism and questions from the federal government and telecommunications regulator.

"We have been listening to our customers and Canadians from across the country who have told us how significant the impacts of the outage were for them," Chloe Luciani-Girouard, a spokeswoman for Rogers Communications, said in an email to CBC News.

"We know that we need to earn back their trust."

Rogers blames massive outage on error during network update

Telecom set to appear in Ottawa to explain further, detail proactive measures

Rogers Communications Inc. says an update to its network caused a malfunction that "very quickly" took down telecom services earlier this month, according to a letter sent to Canada's broadcasting regulator that was released on Friday.

The outage, which started early on July 8 and for some customers lingered for days, left millions without cellphone and internet service — prompting questions from the federal government and the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).

"An update in our core IP [internet protocol] network … caused our IP routing network to malfunction," the letter read.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh pledges to lower cellphone and internet bills

He said unlimited internet plans should be truly unlimited, and not see speeds slow down once a certain amount of usage is reached.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said he wants to make everyday life more affordable for Canadians and plans to start with their cellphone and internet bills.

Flanked by local candidates and union members, in Windsor, Ont., Singh said on Wednesday that if elected prime minister he would work with the CRTC to force large telecommunications companies to reduce prices and cap fees below the global average.

"What it really takes is having the courage to do so," he said.

Singh said his plan would save the average family $1,000, and he noted that in the 2019 election Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau promised to cut cellphone bills to save that much per year for a family of four.

But that has not materialized, and Trudeau has sided with telecom companies over families, he said.

In the last month, they probably overbilled you, charged you unfairly, cut short your conversations, made you listen to muzak for hours while you waited for customer support, or told you outright marketing lies.

A 2017 poll found they’re the industry with the worst reputation in the country, worse even than bankers or oil barons.

Few will be surprised that the commanding heights of Canadians’ corporate shit list are occupied by the telecommunications sector — your phone and internet providers.

The architects of this system are a handful of corporate giants that control virtually all of our communications infrastructure. The Big Five – Bell, Rogers, Telus, Shaw and Quebecor – have perfected the art of squeezing ever-greater profits out of Canada’s captive market of mobile phone and internet users. In 2017, their profits totalled $7.49 billion, and their profit margins have reached an astonishing 46.2 percent.

Their power is about to become even more consolidated. Last week, shareholders of western telecoms giant Shaw Communications voted to accept a buyout offer from Rogers Communications worth $26 billion. If approved by regulators, the merger will reduce wireless competition in about two-thirds of the country, including Toronto and Vancouver.
