whumptember day 1
798 words
~
Caretaker paces in front of the closed door. She wrings her hands behind her back and chews on her lip, staring at the bar of light coming from the other side of the door.
Whumpee had run into the apartment and gone straight to his room, not bothering to drop his keys in the bowl, kick his shoes off onto the boot mat, not even close the door behind himself. He just came in, ran to his room, and slammed the door.
Should she knock?
She stops in front of the door and raises her hand, fist formed and ready to rap on the wood, but something stops her. She can hear faint sobbing on the other side, so quiet that she wouldn't have heard it if she was just a few inches farther from the door.
She exhales slowly and leans her forehead against the door with her hand on the knob.
But then, a sharp exhale from the other side of the door and the sobbing stops. Caretaker pulls her hand off the knob and listens intently for a few seconds, and then leaves.
~
Whumpee digs his nails into the palm of his hand and watches as blood beads out from around his fingertips. The blood flows down the side of his hand and drips onto his pant leg, the coarse fabric quickly wicking it up into a dime-sized stain. Snot runs out of his nose and he uses his sleeve to wipe it away before leaning his head back against the closet door.
He exhales shakily. He screws his eyes shut and pulls his legs to his chest. Dirt scrapes off of his boots and onto the hardwood floor, larger pieces of grit scratching the grain of the wood, but he doesn't care. He wraps his arms around his legs and tries to keep control of his breathing.
Deep breath in.
He's safe at home and Caretaker won't let anyone inside. Whumper can't get to him, he doesn't even know that the apartment exists.
Deep breath out.
It's all over, it's been years since-
Deep breath in.
It's been years since Whumper had any control over him. He has a whole life of his own now, an apartment, a job, he got a fucking degree. Whumper can't do anything to him anymore.
Deep breath out.
So how did it take just one moment to send Whumpee back?
…
Back to when he was growing up and Whumper would shove him against the wall, arm twisted behind his back. The days that he would spend in a dark room because Whumper didn't want to bother to-
"Stop it," he hisses to himself.
Shaky inhale.
Get control back.
Whumpee got out, he got away and there was nothing Whumper could do to stop him from getting away.
Deep breath out.
Caretaker's back, he can hear her anxious footsteps on the other side of the door. Should he tell her? Does he need to tell her?
Would she act like she didn't know?
He screws his eyes shut again and shakes his head before resting his chin on his knee.
'Open the door, Caretaker,' He wants to say. 'There's something I need to tell you.' The words are stuck in his throat, with each beat of his heart, every second he can hear Caretaker pacing on the other side of the door, every breath in, they just get more lodged in his throat, making it almost impossible for him to say anything at all.
Open the door.
He stares at it, at the handle, like Caretaker will somehow know that it's alright for her to open it if he tries hard enough.
~
Caretaker sighs and leans against the wall. She should go in.
Right?
Hand on the knob, it turns just a little bit before she pulls her hand back.
No.
If Whumpee wanted her to come in, he would say so.
Just open the door.
She tries to ignore the voice in her head, but instead, she wraps her hand around the knob and turns it, this time enough to open the door.
"Hey," she says, poking her head through the small opening of the door. "Can I come in?"
Looking around the room, she finally sees him, curled into himself on the floor in front of his closet. He looks at her wearily and nods, scooting over to make space for her on the floor.
Wordlessly, Caretaker steps into the room and slides down the closet door next to him. "You okay?"
She stares at the floor, at the speckles of dirt on the floor from his boots, and picks at the skin around her nails.
He leans his head on her shoulder and sniffles.
"Yeah," she says, taking his silence as an answer. "Yeah, I figured."
Whumperless Whump Event 30: Psychic mishap
Caretaker’s power whirled withing their mind, pushing and rushing against their walls. They struggled to get the surge back under control.
Whumpee cried out.
Caretaker forced their power back down. That would be a headache later, but that was the least of their worries right now.
“Whumpee!” they exclaimed, hurrying to their friend’s side. Whumpee’s hands were up against their temples, their face in a grimace. But the tightness slowly faded, the moment of psychic assault over. “Are you alright?” Caretaker asked.
“I think so...” Whumpee said, opening their eyes.
Caretaker sighed in relief. They’d get a better handle on their abilities, they had to.
