Season 5 of The Wire is it's best season. Fight Me.
I looked up some online discourse about the ranking of HBO's The Wire's seasons before I was finished with it and I saw that it was universally ranked as the lowest season. And maybe that's why I was predisposed to having low expectations, but frankly I really didn't see what everyone was complaining about. I've always loved McNulty and while his departure form Season 4 was a bit disappointing, his character was in a good place, I was happy for him and the season was great even without him. But holy shit man, when you see him relapse HARD at the start of Season 5 you really feel awful about that stupid son of a bitch. And when the serial killer plot starts, you realize he isn't just back to his old shitty self, he's never been this low before. Especially when you realize that if he gets caught, he won't just serve his time like so many of the gangsters we see in the series, he'll get fucking murdered. And when Lester gets in on the farce, and when the journalist starts making shit up and muddying the waters even more, it's fucking peak, it's like the culmination of the squad's purpose, it's amazing. I also loved that the ending was basically a hoax turned so big they can never admit it, thus saving him in the end. Marlo also felt like the culmination of the criminal storyline. While Prop Joe and Stringer embodied how careful and methodical one must be in order to survive and rise in the crime game, Marlo demonstrated that even if you're not the smartest you can balance that out with sheer ruthlessness. And it all evens out in a way. Stringer and Prop Joe's downfall was that they neglected the power, the muscle. Marlo's fault was he was too ruthless, too savage and alienated too many people. Overall my ranking for the seasons would go as follows 5 > 1 > 4 > 2 > 3
