Once Were Warriors is on NZ netflix! switch on ur vpn and give it a watch. (if you dont have a vpn; watch it anyway).
this film is profound, anguished and violent. its essential to ur understanding of nz film and maori culture, especially if you are a fan of temuera morrison (star wars)/taika waitit's comedies. while its fun to occasionally indulge in the stereotype that 'kiwiland' is this idyllic fantasy world, we are a real country with real problems. you cant take the sweet without the bitter and this film explores NZ's bitter history of poverty, abuse, and discrimination, but most importantly: what happens to the survivors?
another communicative victory today

Mornings at Iqbal’s home were filled with fresh Parathas and fresher abuses hurled by Brigadier Jehangir. Iqbal woke up with a sharp sensation in his chest and the dirt of his father’s boots on his Barbie themed pajamas. He tiredly opened his eyes to face his father. The Brigadier had the build of a chonky billauta and the voice of a chronically ill gator, which caused Iqbal to get startled every time he saw him. Getting up from his bed slowly, Iqbal asked. “Mai…kahaan hu?”
“TERI SASUMAA KE GHAR MEIN, GHAJINI KI AULAAD!” Jehangir spat at Iqbal, causing him to jump and sit up, finally feeling awake. “KHOTTEYA, KANJAR KAHI KA! AAJ PEHLA DIN HAI NA TERE SCHOOL KA?! AAJ VI TEM PE NAHI UTHA. LAANAT HAI TUJHPE IQBAL, LAANAT. AAJ GHAR WAPIS MAT AAIYO AGAR JANAZA UTHANE KI NAUBAT NA AAYI HO. AB JAA, JAAKE NAHA!” Iqbal simply nodded and left the room, smiling to himself. On a usual day, he would be furious at Jehangir for saying all of that, but today was special. The school was reopening, and after the longest time ever, Iqbal was finally going to meet Sajid at school today. He had a bath while listening to Taylor Swift songs, dreaming about all that’ll happen when he finally meets his boyfriend. After a long shower with hopeless bathroom singing, Iqbal wore his school uniform and stepped out of his house. The school bus arrived, with the bus driver, Shiraz Baloch playing the sarvajanik and globally recognized bus driver playlist: 1. Bohot jatate ho chaah humse, karoge kaise nibaah humse? aye dil, aye dil, aye dil, aye dil 2. Chori chori dil tera churayenge 3. Chura ke dil mera goriya chali 4. Mujhse mohabbat ka izhaar karti, kaash koi ladki mujhe pyaaar karti 5. Aaye ho meri zindagi mein tum bahaar banke And so on… The bus stopped and Iqbal entered and ran to sit next to his best friend, Javed. While the bus started again with a jolt, and the two best friends spoke, Iqbal noticed Javed being slightly uncomfortable. With a knowing look, Iqbal his head towards the front. Two seats ahead sat Ulfat and Rehman, having their daily PDA session. They spoke in unison, “Kasam ki kasam hai kasam se, humein pyaar hai sirf tumse, ab ye pyaar na hoga kisi aur se, kasam ki kasam hai kasam se” as Iqbal and Javed groaned. They were not the only ones annoyed though, right in front of Ulfat and Rehman, Seher was rolling her eyes. Not only was her best friend ignoring her, she was also reconciling with Rehman after their 14th break up this year, and it was only April.
As the bus reached Lyari Bal Vidya Mandir, Seher got down from the bus begrudgingly, as Ulfat chased her, shouting a plethora of apologies. She turned towards Rehman, and showed him her middle finger at which Rehman sighed. “15th break up it is, isn’t she perfect?” he thought to himself, showing pleading, apologetic eyes to Ulfat who snarled at him for this. Ulfat finally held Seher’s shoulders, panting because of chasing her. “Kya hua hai tujhe? Aise kyu kar rahi hai mere sath? Kis baat pe gussa hai?” Ulfat demanded from an angrily glaring Seher. “Haan Ulfat! Humesha kuch na kuch mujhe hi hua hota hai na! Because queen Ulfat is just never wrong!” Seher shouted, tears brimming in her eyes. “Seher, come on, don’t be silly. I practically spend the entire day with you. Ek bus ride apne boyfriend ke saath baith gayi toh tumhe kya dikkat hai? Stop being so insecure for heaven’s sake” Ulat replied, refusing to let her armour down. “Oh so I am the problem now? Ulfat, you both break up over the silliest of things, and then you expect me to act like you’re the perfect couple. He practically worships the ground you walk on, aur tum usse apne talve chatwati ho? What is wron-”
Seher stopped speaking abruptly when she saw that Ulfat wasn’t paying any attention to whatever she was saying. Rather, Ulfat’s eyes were at the entrance of the school. *Kukkad kamaal da starts playing*
A tall, broad framed man was entering the campus. He had dark and piercing eyes, his smile contagious. Five minutes in Lyari Bal Vidya Mandir, and all the girls were already swooning over him. Ulfat was ogling at him shamelessly. Seher was too. Finally, some good eye-candy in Lyari Bal Vidya Mandir. Rehman stood from a distance, scornfully looking at the new boy, who apparently took Ulfat's attention away from him.
And then, something unexpected happened. This new beefcake walked in, his eyes fixed onto Seher’s, causing her to get flustered and look away. He came closer, standing barely a few inches away from Seher, as he extended his palm for a handshake.
“Gurbaaz Singh. You can call me Pinda, or yours, I don’t really mind” The new boy chuckled.
Seher was shook at his boldness. It took her a while to process the fact that this new boy had just…declared his love for her???
After a few awkward moments Seher spent to calm her nerves, she replied with calmness she never knew she possessed, “Seher. Seher Khan. And you’re gonna have to work harder than that, I’m sorry”
Ulfat, dumbstruck by the romance unfurling before her eyes, looked for Radhika, who completed their trio. Her eyes found Radhika and Ajay teaching a young Yalina, Sam, and other kids of their grade to conduct the assembly. Radhika had always taken a liking towards younger children, and Ajay wanted to create an impression of being just like her, even though he did not know any other kids except his own nephew, Sam.
After all the students assembled in the hall, the assembly began. A seven-year-old Yalina was repeating the lines Radhika had just taught to her.
“Good morninggg, LBVM! I am Yalina Jamali from grade 2 and t-today my class is going to conduct the assembly. So…uh-ummm” Yalina went blank. Teary eyed, she tried to recall what Radhika and Ajay made her memorise, but she couldn’t find any words. Seeing the sneering faces in the crowd only made her feel worse.
Jameel Jamali, standing on the other side of the stage, looked at the students with disgust. So what if she forgot a line? She is, at the end of the day, just a child. His thoughts were interrupted by a high pitched, but strong voice of another seven year old boy…Sam.
Immediately picking off where Yalina left, Sam continued, “and so, I now request each one of you to join your hands, close your eyes, and prepare yourselves for the morning prayers”
Yalina looked at him with a grateful expression, as Sam got flustered receiving such attention from her. He fought back a giggle and wiped away Yalina’s tears.
Below the stage, Ajay shyly put his arm around Radhika, slow enough to let her pull back whenever she wanted. Much to Ajay’s surprise, she didn’t.
“Mera bhateeja…kitna samajhdaar hai…” Ajay said, trying to fill the void of awkwardness between them.
“Uh..Yeah, yeah, I agree. I loved how he handled Yalina up on the stage, he is such a little gentleman” Radhika replied, the blush creeping up her neck owing to the proximity.
Something had gotten into Ajay. He felt braver being so close to the girl he could once only dream about.
“You know…his Uncle is a gentleman too…” Ajay said, causing Radhika’s eyes to go wide.
LATER THAT DAY, AT LUNCH.
Seher was having her lunch of Bhindi ki Sabzi and roti when Pinda suddenly stood in front of her.
“Khan Sahab, kaisi hain?” He said, with a smug look on his face
“Khan ‘Sahiba’. Urdu nahi aati aapko?” Seher replied, trying to fight back the smile on her face
“Wahi toh mohtarma, Punjabi hi maine inni mehnat se sikkhi. Tussi sikha do menu urdu-shurdu, hain?” Pinda retorted, winking at her.
“Hum aapko toh nahi hi sikhayenge, gone case hain aap”
“Aree! Aise kivein bol rahe ho tussi? Mai bohot changa student aan, try ta karke dekho!”
Seher took a sharp breath, and said, “Theek hai fir, milo mujhe aaj shaam ko, Aalaam Bhai ki Coffee shop pe.”
Pinda grinned like an idiot as Seher finally gave in.
“Strictly sirf Urdu sikhane ke liye. Completely professional.” She said firmly, as Pinda nodded enthusiastically. Oh, how well she knew this was not going to be “completely professional”
As Pinda left, she smiled to herself and turned around. When she was trying to look for Ulfat, she found Rehman, who overheard the whole conversation she just had. While she expected him to be happy for her and smile…he looked at her completely grim, as if he was a child and she had taken away his favourite toy. Did he just…
No. It can’t be…he loves Ulfat, right?

the oil slick - chapter 2 (8.6k)
"Uhh," Leo says eloquently. "I'm sorry — Big Mama?" "Indeed," the yokai says, "she has a proposition for you. It would be within your best interest to hear her out." "Wow, okay," Leo manages through the bridle placed on his mind's transcription of sounds to meaning. "So, I don't know if she got the message from the last time we talked, but I'm not really interested in becoming pals with her like that. I'm only sixteen, y'know." (Also, she totally fucked my dad, he doesn't say.) "She's not interested in 'becoming pals'," they answer coldly. or: leo encounters an uncomfortably familiar face.
chapter 2 is now up! sorry i've posted a lot later in the day; i'm busy on mondays for the next few weeks LOL. in this week's chapter, a lot of plot starts happening...

Regarding these tags below that I put on a post about destigmatizing psychotic symptoms:
So I want to be extremely clear here. I am (among other things) a medical research analyst by professional and training, and dysautonomia is my specialty HOWEVER I am not myself a QUALIFIED MEDICAL RESEARCHER. Please take what I'm about to say as a simplified explanation for purposes of patient care and be responsible with your own continuing research on the subject.
My diagnosis is NOT a POTS diagnosis, but dysautonomia as a class of diagnoses tends to include a wide variety of overlapping symptoms, and share comborbidities, so it is entirely possible the research I have done for my condition will also be applicable to others.
Dysautonomia comes in two types, primary and secondary, and is a broad class of symptom clusters that can be classified as "dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system". Secondary forms of dysautonomia such as those caused by PTSD, diabetes, ADHD, autoimmune dysfunction, malnutrition, etc will typically require treatment of both the dysautonomia AND the precipitating condition in order to adequately manage symptoms over time. However, primary forms of dysautonomia such as a heart arythmia, orthostatic hypo-/hyper-tension conditions, etc will likely need to be treated at the source of the electromagnetic disruption so that your cardio-vascular system can function as intended and manage symptoms.
In my case, a combination of a connective tissue disorder that affects the structure of my veins, several primary and secondary forms of dysautonomia that specifically create hypo-activity in my autonomic nervous system (ANS) in the parasympathetic ANS, reducing my body's ability enter "rest and digest" stages, I struggle with what is know as "blood pooling". The more "upright" I am, the longer I remain so, the more my blood "drains and pools" in my extremities, and the more my cardiovascular system struggles to maintain circulation to (and thus oxygention of) my brain.
A brain that is suffocating is going to react to the world in unexpected ways. A brain that is chronically suffocating and pulling itself back from going comatose with losses of consciousness and other survival responses in the body to the chronic oxygen deprivation, it is going to develop long term consequences.
When people say that dysautonomia can cause symptoms of anxiety, often what they mean is "when your body goes into fight or flight [which will be more frequent, easier to trigger, and harder to come back from for you due to a hypoactive parasympathetic ANS] your brain experiences cognitive, biochemical, and hormonal changes that may trigger racing thoughts, emotional and thought reactivity, disorganized and tangential thinking, "hallucinated" sensations, extreme black and white thinking or catastrophization, and emotional dysregulation. You may also experience chronic hyperventilation due to these reactions, which can exacerbate your anxious and psychotic symptoms."
I am treated for my dysautonomia with the following:
Stimulent medications
Muscle relaxers
Anti-histamines
Chemical vasoconstrictors
Compression garmentry from toe to collarbone
Dietary and behavioral routines
And I can tell when I have dropped the ball on my routines because my cognitive symptoms will return first. I will feel confused, reactive, "psychotic" [I don't know how else to explain what it feels like when you can viscerally feel psychosis in your body. Maybe paranoia? Help me out if you've been here folks], overwhelmed, skittery and scared, and on the edge of emotional breakdown. It's long before any externally identifiable symptoms, and learning to recognize it as a dysautonomia episode I have to treat at the source has been the only way I have learned to interrupt these moments or modulate how uncomfortable they are.
Psychosis really is way more common than people think and MOST people will experience it at some point or another, even if only briefly or temporarily. And were we all better taught how to LIVE with it rather than being afraid of it, we might actually all get the care and support we need for it genuinely FEEL like a normal non-issue human experience.
That said. As someone who, because of this condition, has demonstrated extremely visible and diagnoseable psychosis since I was a toddler, I want to add a word of caution about seeking medical help.
I have had medical providers who handled my disclosure around this great and genuinely provided wonderful and effective care. I have also been institutionalized against my will, subjected to electroshock therapies and experimental research treatments before I even hit puberty, and medicated out of my mind while I was nearly dying of malnutrition such that I could no longer advocate for my own care. Calling for the destigmatization of psychosis is not just a social ask, it's a medical one. Very few of my coworkers in the medical field know that I experience psychosis because I know many of them would see and interact with me differently if they did. Many psychotic people have dealt with horrific medical abuse, and it is common in the medical field to simply refuse to treat a psychotic person.
I wish more people COULD get professional/medical support for their psychosis, but the lack of education isn't the only reason that often goes poorly, and it would be irresponsible of me to leave people with the impression that one can just go into a doctor's office, say one is experiencing psychosis, and get real help. Particularly when it comes to secondary psychosis from a medical condition that is already completely unable to be treated outside of about 3 medical specialties so rare that there is ONE doctor for my condition between the carolinas and texas, and I have simply never met a primary care doctor who even knew what it was let alone how to treat it.
Destigmatization is important for a lot of reasons, and I do hope that people who realize from my story that they may also experience psychosis also realize that it is not an accident they have learned to see psychotics as so inherently other that it never occurred to them it felt like this. Please don't forget to listen to those of us who have already been on this path as you choose to take it up for yourself, you may find there is even more to learn about us [and yourself] than you realized <3
Welcome in, stay safe, and act with kindness towards yourself and others
A Love Letter To The Very First Panel In The Series
I mean, just look at it. It may be my bias for adoring art that expresses the emotional impact of a scene rather than the cut and clear of exactly what happened, but these four panels convey SO much feeling damnit.
The first three panels are such an expressive progression, we get zero dialog, and yet the anxious experience is fully conveyed to us.
Obviously, when seeing this for the first time, we have no context. We don't know who Tem is or who he's with, or what kind of conversation they're having. But we can feel his reluctance.
Coming back to the first manga after finishing the series, or at least finishing Tem and Riz's story arc, we have significantly more context to this scene.
Personally, I imagine Tem was nervous when Riz invited him to meet at night, that he was afraid of what Riz might've meant when he told him he wanted to show his true self. But he trusted Riz as a friend much more than he feared him as a carnivore. So he met him anyway.
I feel in these three panels, we see it shift, as Riz's unmedicated strength and strange behavior changes Tem's view of him. Suddenly he isn't with a trusted friend, but a predator, whose presence makes him uncomfortable. He attempts to reject and excuse himself from the situation, and immediately his fears are validated.
The fourth panel is incredible.
On the first read, it rings as an ominous display of violence against herbivores, it sets the tone of the series literally on the very first page.
The silhouette also looks much more canine-like than bear-like, which suits how the reader is initially given the impression that Legoshi was the attacker before his scene with Ells proves otherwise. It gives us a chance to fear and assume, putting us in the herbivore's shoes, before Legoshi takes over as our carnivore protagonist.
With later context, I feel the canine-like silhouette represents how, to herbivores and in general, violence looks the same no matter who the person is that's committing it.
We of course don't see Riz in the first three panels either, but in the fourth he isn't just off screen, he has devolved into a lunging grey mass of maw and claw. Tem vanishes, too, the two of them blending together. No longer personified, they are nothing but their instinct.
I truly adore this page.
