I totally forgot to post a picture of my temperature snake. I started it on my birthday instead of January 1st (because I still didn't know how to crochet by then).

Three months of temperature snek!
I’ve been wanting to do a temperature blanket for a while now but keep putting it off because I’m a “what if”-er. What if I get my yarn gradient set and then there’s a severe spike or dip I did not anticipate? (It’s -3°F outside at the moment, which does not bode well for February and if this winter is colder then what if summer is weird…)
Then I had an idea. Instead of the current year, what if I look up the year I was born for the city I was born in? I could make my birthday a special stitch or a completely different color or mix the day’s color with something. Something to make it stand out as my birthday but also fit in with the overall piece. I’m open to suggestions for the birthday row.
Is this an interesting idea or should I just stick with the day by day for the here and now?
Oooohhhh!! What if you made temperature snakes personalized for someone!! Make a plushie for a kid that’s specialized for their year/location/birthday?! That’d be fun!
2025(-ish) temperature snake
@straw-hat-moro suggested we make temperature snakes this year (blankets are too time consuming) and seeing as it's the year of the snake I decided to start on Jan 29th and do a lunar year snake. The opportunity was too good to pass!
The snek:
The gauge (°C):
I actually had to re-do the entire body because I originally had only 7 colours and using one colour for 12 days in a row was just sad.
And that's not mentioning how many times I've re-done the head to shape it properly...
Wrangling an Excel document to colour temperatures according to the gauge was exhausting but also very fun and I'm proud of the results, even if it took over an hour.
Four months of my temperature snake. We have our first yellow and orange days as well as a week of one single colour.
Temperature snake update.
Small fail is I didn't realize how hard it is to tell the ice blue from the white...
hi!! read your tags on my post just now, and i was really interested in temperature snake project you mentioned!! it sounds really cool and id be delighted to know more about it if youre willing to share!!
omg yes!! so it’s basically just a silly version of a temperature scarf or blanket — where you crochet or knit a row with a color representing the maximum temperature that day, every day for a year. I’ve been wanting to make one for a while, but a blanket or scarf sounded like a big project, so when a friend of mine sent me a reel about someone making a temperature snake, I decided that sounded more fun!! so I found this pattern and have been crocheting my snake a week at a time!! It’s been a really fun, low-stakes project :)
This is Lumpy!! Each of his colors represent an 8-degree fahrenheit range, and I’ve added a green band to divide each month.
First month of my temperature snake! (I started on my birthday instead on January 1st)
It's been a sad month, we only had sun these last two days.
