This peaceful temple is Kichijoji, found in Saijo, Ehime Prefecture. It's temple number 63 on the famous Shikoku Pilgrimage. Saijo sits between the sea and mountains in western Japan, known for spring water and spiritual heritage. Today’s images take you above and around this quiet sacred site.
From the air, you can see the whole temple complex tucked into the town. Traditional rooftops and straight garden paths stand out against the nearby houses. These photos capture the clean geometry and calm that draw visitors here. Up close, you’ll spot a tall statue of Kūkai—also called Kōbō Daishi—holding his staff and beads. He's the monk who founded this pilgrimage over a thousand years ago.
The temple bell rests under a finely built wooden belfry. These bells are rung during ceremonies to mark time and invite stillness. The main hall (hondō) has wide eaves and a simple gravel courtyard. This building holds the temple’s main object of worship—Bishamonten, a guardian deity often linked to protection and good fortune.
Kichijoji blends the local feel of a small town with the timeless pull of Buddhist tradition. The details—statues, gates, bell—show care and history in every stone.
