Tonight's sunset over Tokushima, looking west towards the mountains of Ehime.

While an Ehime sunset often means watching the sun dip into the sea, here in Tokushima, we get a different kind of magic as it sinks behind the land. The way the light caught these dramatic clouds was a spectacular sight.

On Strength and Sweetness

Just came across a couple of Japanese phrases that are often attributed to Keanu Reeves, and they really resonated. They carry a certain kind of quiet, resilient wisdom.

First up:

孤独な人だけが最も強い

(Kodoku na hito dake ga mottomo tsuyoi)

"Only the lonely are the strongest."

It speaks to the idea that true strength is often forged in solitude, when you learn to rely on yourself.

And it's followed by this beautiful thought:

全ての苦味が尽きたら、全ての甘さに出会う

(Subete no nigami ga tsukitara, subete no amasa ni deau)

"When all the bitterness is gone, you will encounter all the sweetness."

A reminder that getting through the hard times makes the good times that much sweeter. A perfect little dose of hope.

It inspired me to make this video, I am usually very shy about speaking Japanese publicly because I usually mess up, took about 5 attempts to get it right.

Chasing the Last Light in Ehime

It started as a simple idea: catch the last sunset of June from the coast of Ogawa Village. The Seto Inland Sea is famous for its calm, island-dotted waters, but on this evening, it was the light that stole the show. The whole world seemed to slow down, bathed in a soft, golden glow.

Even the modern lines of a quiet beachfront cafe were transformed, its windows reflecting the sun's fire. The patios were empty, leaving just the sound of the gentle tide and the warm light as company.

Further down the shore, a lone fisherman stood against the fading light, a timeless silhouette. A perfect moment of peace and patience, seemingly undisturbed by the spectacular drama unfolding in the sky.

As the sun finally dipped below the mountains, it offered one last gift—a tiny seabird perched on a rock, perfectly silhouetted against the last sliver of orange on the water. A quiet end to a magnificent day.

From Hospital Bed to Sunset Skies

It's been a weird week. Over the weekend, I had a lovely encounter with Japan's nature that ended with me in the hospital getting a tick dug out of my leg. Good times. You really haven't lived until a nice nurse is telling you to "relax" while holding a pair of tweezers she seems far too excited to use.

But the universe has a funny way of balancing things out. Tonight, feeling decidedly less invaded by arachnids, I sent the drone up from my garden. And this is what I got.

This is the view looking west over the Seto Inland Sea, captured with my DJI Mavic 3 Classic. The camera on this thing is a beast—a custom Hasselblad L2D-20c with a 4/3 CMOS sensor that just drinks in the light during these golden hours. It's moments like this, getting to pilot a flying Swedish camera over my home in rural Japan, that make dealing with the occasional blood-sucking parasite totally worth it.

From the trials of the trail to the tranquility of the sky. Not a bad trade-off.

SUNSET IN HOJO, EHIME – A MELANCHOLY GLOW OVER THE PADDY FIELDS

The sun sinks quietly into the Seto Inland Sea, casting a golden trail across the water’s surface. In Hojo, Ehime, the newly irrigated paddy fields reflect the last light of day, their glassy surfaces mirroring the sky’s gentle melancholy. The town sits in stillness, caught between the stoic calm of the encroaching night and the quiet hope that tomorrow brings.

There’s a certain poetry to this landscape: the symmetry of the fields, the distant silhouettes of islands in Seto Naikai Marine National Park, and the soft lines of mountains fading into dusk. The roads and rivers cut through the scene, reminders of movement and persistence—life continuing, no matter how slow or subtle the change.

Tonight, the air is heavy with the scent of water and earth. The paddy fields, newly filled, shimmer with promise. Even as the day ends, there’s a comfort in the cycle: endings are beginnings, and every sunset holds the seed of a new dawn.
