TEMPLE NEWS: Groundbreaking Held For San Pedro Sula Honduras Temple

The Church broke ground for the San Pedro Sula Honduras Temple on Saturday, 5 September 2020. Elder José Bernardo Hernández , an Area Seventy originally from San Pedro Sula, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony. Attendance at the temple site was limited to a small number of area Church leaders, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The San Pedro Sula Honduras Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2019 General Conference. When completed, it will be the second temple in Honduras.

The Arequipa Peru Temple groundbreaking ceremony was held on the same day as the groundbreaking for the Rio de Janeiro Brazil Temple. The Arequipa Temple grounds include a garden of flowers, trees, and grasses native to the region, such as the cantuta (Peru’s national flower), the queñua tree (found in the Andes mountains), and the achupaya, which is used in traditional Incan handicrafts. The temple grounds also feature a Spanish-style water fountain, similar to fountains found in plazas and courtyards throughout the city of Arequipa.

TEMPLE REOPENING STATUS: 21 September 2020

The Church has announced the next group of temples to reopen. The following three temples will reopen for living sealings of previously endowed members on Monday, 28 September 2020:

Cochabamba Bolivia Temple

Mérida Mexico Temple

San Salvador El Salvador Temple

The following two temples are scheduled to reopen in Phase 1 today, 21 September 2020 (These temples had previously resumed Phase 1 operation but were then closed again):

Newport Beach California

San Diego California

Phase 1 of the reopening process allows for living husband-and-wife sealing ordinances to be performed for members who have been previously endowed, with the sealing ordinances to follow strict guidelines and safety precautions. Only members of the Church living in that temple’s assigned district may schedule living sealings. There are now 146 temples that have either reopened or are preparing to reopen. The full list can be found at the end of this post.

The following four temples will begin Phase 2 of reopening on Monday, 28 September 2020:

Papeete Tahiti Temple

San Diego California Temple

The following ten temples are scheduled to advance to Phase 2 today, 21 September 2020:

Phase 2 allows for the performance all temple ordinances for living individuals, with priority given for those who will be sealed. The next priority will be endowments for in-field missionaries (who left home prior to receiving their endowment), then followed by those departing for missionary service in the near future. There are now 103 temples that have either advanced or are preparing to advance to Phase 2.

The Barranquilla Colombia Temple groundbreaking ceremony took place in the 50th anniversary year of the Church in Colombia. The Barranquilla Temple site is elevated, which gives visitors views of the Magdalena River (the largest river in Colombia) and of the Caribbean Sea. During a special youth devotional held on the evening before the Barranquilla Colombia Temple was dedicated, Elder Ulisses Soares of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, counseled the youth of the temple district: “Whatever you do, keep your eyes on the temple... We are all transformed when we go to the temple.”

The Concepción Chile Temple was built on a floating foundation due to the high risk of seismic activity in the region. With this foundation, a 10-magnitude earthquake would feel like a 2-magnitude quake to someone inside the temple. The groundbreaking ceremony for the Concepción Temple was held on the same day as the groundbreaking for the Tucson Arizona Temple. President Russell M. Nelson dedicated the Concepción Chile Temple near the conclusion of his South American ministry tour - his first ministry tour to the area as President of the Church.

The Tijuana Mexico Temple design was inspired by the Spanish Colonial missions located throughout Mexico and the southwestern United States, most notably the San Xavier del Bac Mission in Tucson, Arizona. The Tijuana Temple won the 2015 Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Design Award for Best International Building Structure before temple construction was even completed. Between the groundbreaking ceremony on 18 August 2012 and the time full-scale construction on the temple began, members in the temple district had already prepared 300,000 new names for temple ordinances. Prior to the completion of the Tijuana Mexico Temple, nearly 45% of temple recommend holders were unable to cross the US/Mexico border to attend the San Diego California Temple despite the temple being less than 50 miles away. As a result many members had to travel to the Hermosillo Mexico Temple, a 12-hour bus ride, to participate in temple ordinances.

TEMPLE NEWS: Church Announces Groundbreaking Date, Releases Rendering for Salta Argentina Temple

The Church has announced the groundbreaking date and released the official artist rendering for the Salta Argentina Temple

Ground will be broken for the Salta Argentina Temple on Saturday, 15 August 2020. Elder Benjamin De Hoyos, president of the South America South Area, will preside over the groundbreaking ceremony. Attendance at the temple site will be by invitation only, but the proceedings will be broadcast to meetinghouses in the temple district. The artist rendering for the Salta Temple has also been released. The Salta Argentina Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2018 General Conference and will be the third temple built in Argentina.

The Trujillo Peru Temple was built in the archaeological buffer zone for the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Chan Chan. As a result, the Church had to get a special permit before excavating the temple site, and an archaeologist was on site during the excavation. Nothing archaeologically significant was found, and construction was able to proceed uninterrupted. The Trujillo Peru Temple was dedicated on Father’s Day, President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, in his dedicatory remarks, said “We are told to celebrate, honor and worship our Father in Heaven--and this is Father’s Day... What an honor and a wonderful privilege it is to give to our Heavenly Father this house of the Lord.”
