TEMPLE NEWS: Twenty New Temples Announced

During his concluding remarks at the Sunday Afternoon Session of the April 2021 General Conference, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to build twenty new temples. This is the largest single-day temple announcement in Church history. The new temples will be built in the following locations:

Why’d you pick Indianapolis as your icon? (As a Hoosier, I approve 😊)

Thanks foe the question! I chose Indianapolis because I grew up about half an hour where the Indianapolis temple was built. The ward in which I lived for the first 25 years of my life is now in the Indianapolis temple district and it was a very exciting moment when President Monson announced that a temple was coming to Indianapolis.

Brasília Brazil Temple

The Church broke ground for the Brasília Brazil Temple on Saturday, 26 September 2020, with Elder Adilson de Paula Parrella, president of the Brazil Area, presiding at the ceremony. The The Brasília Brazil Temple was announced by President Thomas S. Monson during the April 2017 General Conference. There are currently seven dedicated temples in Brazil, with another awaiting dedication and two more in various stages of construction. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, attendance at the temple sites for the groundbreaking will be by invitation only, but the proceedings will be broadcast to select meetinghouses in the respective temple districts.

Taylorsville Utah Temple

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Taylorsville Utah Temple will be held in October 2020, with the exact date yet to be annouced. Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will preside at the ceremony. The Taylorsville Utah Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2019 General Conference. Antofagasta Chile Temple

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Antofagasta Chile Temple will be held in November 2020, with the exact date yet to be announced. Elder Juan Pablo Villar of the South America South Area presidency will preside at the ceremony. The Antofagasta Chile Temple was announced by President Russell M. Davao Philippines Temple

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Davao Philippines Temple will be held in November 2020, with the exact date yet to be announced. Elder Taniela B. Wakolo, Philippines Area President, will preside at the ceremony. The Davao Philippines Temple was announced by President Russell M. Mendoza Argentina Temple

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Mendoza Argentina Temple will be held in November 2020, with the exact date yet to be announced. Elder Allen D. Haynie of the South America South Area presidency will preside at the ceremony. The Mendoza Argentina Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2018 General Conference. The groundbreaking ceremony for the Harare Zimbabwe Temple will be held in December 2020, with the exact date yet to be announced. TEMPLE REOPENING STATUS: 5 October 2020

The Church has announced the next group of temples to reopen. The following temple will reopen for living sealings of previously endowed members on Monday, 12 October 2020:

The following temple will reopen for living sealings of previously endowed members on Monday, 5 October 2020:

The following three temples reopened in Phase 1 on Monday, 28 September 2020:

Phase 1 of the reopening process allows for living husband-and-wife sealing ordinances to be performed for members who have been previously endowed, with the sealing ordinances to follow strict guidelines and safety precautions. Only members of the Church living in that temple’s assigned district may schedule living sealings. There are now 148 temples that have either reopened or are preparing to reopen. The full list can be found at the end of this post.

Salta Argentina Temple

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Salta Argentina Temple has been postponed once again due to the continuing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally scheduled for 15 August 2020 before bering postponed to 9 October 2020, the Salta Argentina Temple groundbreaking is now scheduled to occur in November 2020, with the exact date yet to be announced. Elder Benjamín De Hoyos, president of the South America South Area, will preside at the ceremony. The Salta Argentina Temple was announced by President Russell M. Okinawa Japan Temple

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Okinawa Japan Temple will be held in December 2020, with the exact date yet to be announced. Elder Takashi Wada, president of the Asia North Area, will preside at the ceremony. The Okinawa Japan Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2019 General Conference. TEMPLE SITE ANNOUNCEMENTS

Port Moresby Papua New Guinea Temple

The Church has released an artist rendering and announced the location of the Port Moresby Papua New Guinea Temple. The temple will be constructed on Muniogo Crescent in the Badili neighborhood of Port Moresby on the site of an existing meetinghouse. The existing meetinghouse will be demolished and replaced by the 9500-square-foot temple, lodging for temple missionaries and patrons, a distribution center, and a residence for the temple president and matron. No groundbreaking date has been announced. The Port Moresby Papua New Guinea Temple was announced by President Russell M. TEMPLE NEWS: Church Announces Site, Releases Rendering for Port Moresby Papua New Guinea Temple

The Church has released an artist rendering and announced the location of the Port Moresby Papua New Guinea Temple. CONSTRUCTION ROUNDUP: 8 September 2020

Here is a full update on the status of temple construction throughout the world. Future news roundups will only feature construction updates since the last roundup post unless otherwise noted.

SCHEDULED TEMPLE DEDICATIONS

All temple open house and dedications which were scheduled to occur since the Church closed all temples due to the COVID-19 pandemic have been postponed until large public gatherings are deemed safe by local governmental authorities. There are currently no temple dedications currently scheduled. The following temples are completed or nearing completion and awaiting dedication:

Rio de Janiero Brazil Temple

Construction has been completed for the Rio de Janiero Brazil Temple. The open house and dedication were originally scheduled to occur in the spring of 2020 but were postponed. The Rio de Janiero Brazil Temple was announced by President Thomas S. Monson during the April 2013 General Conference. Winnipeg Manitoba Temple

Construction is nearing completion for the Winnipeg Manitoba Temple. The open house and dedication were originally scheduled to occur in the fall of 2020 but have since been postponed. The Winnipeg Manitoba Temple was announced by President Thomas S. Monson during the April 2011 General Conference. It will be the first temple in Manitoba and the ninth temple in Canada. SCHEDULED TEMPLE REDEDICATIONS

All temple rededications which were scheduled to occur since the Church closed all temples due to the COVID-19 pandemic have been postponed until large public gatherings are deemed safe by local governmental authorities. There are currently no temple rededications currently scheduled. The following temple renovation has been completed and the temple is now awaiting rededication:

Washington DC Temple

The Washington DC Temple  has been closed since 29 September 2017 for extensive renovations to the interior and exterior. It was originally scheduled for rededication in late 2020. The Washington DC Temple was the 16th temple in the Church and the first temple built in both the eastern United States and the state of Maryland. The Church broke ground for the San Pedro Sula Honduras Temple on Saturday, 5 September 2020. Elder José Bernardo Hernández , an Area Seventy originally from San Pedro Sula, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony. Attendance at the temple site was limited to a small number of area Church leaders, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The San Pedro Sula Honduras Temple was announced by President Russell M. Orem Utah Temple

The Church broke ground for the Orem Utah Temple on Saturday, 5 September 2020. Elder Craig C. Christensen, president of the Utah Area, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony. Attendance at the temple site was limited to a small number of area Church leaders, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The Orem Utah Temple was announced by President Russell M. TEMPLE NEWS: Church Announces Site, Releases Rendering for Davao Philippines Temple

The Church has released an artist rendering and announced the location of the Davao Philippines Temple. The temple will be constructed in Barangay Ma-a at the intersection of Ma-a Road and Anahaw Road on the site of an existing meetinghouse. The existing meetinghouse will be demolished and replaced by the temple, a new meetinghouse, and a housing facility for patrons and the temple presidency. No groundbreaking date has been announced. The Davao Philippines Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2018 General Conference and will be the sixth temple built in the Philippines.

TEMPLE NEWS: Church Holds Groundbreaking For Orem Utah Temple

The Church broke ground for the Orem Utah Temple on Saturday, 5 September 2020. Elder Craig C. Christensen, president of the Utah Area, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony. Attendance at the temple site was limited to a small number of area Church leaders, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The Orem Utah Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the October 2019 General Conference. When completed, it will be the 22nd temple in Utah and the sixth temple in Utah County, Utah.

TEMPLE REOPENING STATUS: 7 September 2020

The Church has announced the next group of temples to reopen as part of the first phase of a 4-phase plan to reopen all temples worldwide. The following five temples will reopen for living sealings of previously endowed members on Monday, 14 September 2020:

Monterrey Mexico Temple

San José Costa Rica Temple

Veracruz Mexico Temple

Villahermosa Mexico Temple

The following two temples are scheduled to reopen in Phase 1 today, 7 September 2020:

Hermosillo Sonora Mexico Temple

Port-au-Prince Haiti Temple

Phase 1 of the reopening process allows for living husband-and-wife sealing ordinances to be performed for members who have been previously endowed, with the sealing ordinances to follow strict guidelines and safety precautions. Only members of the Church living in that temple’s assigned district may schedule living sealings. There are now 144 temples that have either reopened or are preparing to reopen. Phase 2 allows for the performance all temple ordinances for living individuals, with priority given for those who will be sealed. The next priority will be endowments for in-field missionaries (who left home prior to receiving their endowment), then followed by those departing for missionary service in the near future. These priorities will be addressed according to the capacity and scheduling ability of each temple.There are now 89 temples that have either advanced or are preparing to advance to Phase 2. The Church will reopen additional temples, as well as progress to additional phases of the reopening process, as changing restrictions and local conditions allow.

TEMPLE NEWS: Groundbreaking Held For San Pedro Sula Honduras Temple

The Church broke ground for the San Pedro Sula Honduras Temple on Saturday, 5 September 2020. Elder José Bernardo Hernández , an Area Seventy originally from San Pedro Sula, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony. Attendance at the temple site was limited to a small number of area Church leaders, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The San Pedro Sula Honduras Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2019 General Conference. When completed, it will be the second temple in Honduras.

COMING SOON: Regular Temple Updates

Now that I’ve made posts about every currently dedicated temple, I’ve decided what I’m going to do next. Starting next Tuesday, I will be sharing a mini-digest of temple updates. Next week’s post will give a quick summary of the construction status of every temple currently under construction or awaiting groundbreaking. Then, every two weeks, I’ll share a digest of all temple construction news that has taken place since the previous post. If nothing has changed during those two weeks, I’ll share an uplifting temple story, a conference talk about temples, or other similar content. This will be the main format for the foreseeable future.

In addition to the bi-weekly construction updates, I will also be sharing weekly updates on the reopening of temples following the shutdown due to COVID-19. Starting next Monday, I’ll share any status changes announced that week, as well as the updated operating status list of all temples. I chose Monday for these updates since that’s when the Church has been announcing re-openings and when previously announced re-openings take effect.

Finally, I do still plan to share breaking news posts as they happen - new temples announced at General Conference, new or updated information regarding groundbreakings, open houses, dedications, etc. And of course, feel free to share any content suggestions you may have by contacting me on any Temple Tuesday social media account (Tumblr, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter). The Durban South Africa Temple was built just north of Durban in Umhlanga - one of the fastest growing cities in South Africa - and is situated near the Indian Ocean. King Goodwill Zwelithini and Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi of the Zulu Nation, both praised the Church after the Durban Temple was completed, expressing gratitude for the spiritual and temporal service the Church has given to the people of South Africa and the Zulu Nation. The Durban South Africa Temple was the last temple to be dedicated before the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic caused the Church to temporarily close all operating temples and postpone dedications of temples then under construction.
