Nicol Becomes Engaged to Fray Randall

Ginger Tucker and Fray Randall visit Katarina at the Ministry to ask for her help. Marquis Randall, Fray’s father, arranged for her to be married to another member of Prince Geoffrey’s faction after she graduates. The man that Fray will be forced to marry is old enough to be Fray’s father and there are sketchy rumors about what happened to his previous wives.

Katarina takes them to Nicol because she believes that he might know of a solution. Nicol explains explains that the only way to keep Fray from being forced to marry that man is for her to become engaged to someone better.

After some thinking, Nicol offers to become Fray’s temporary fiancé until they can find a permanent solution. Fray accepts after thinking about it for a bit.

Marquis Randall is convinced to cancel the previous engagement as the son of the Prime Minister who could become Prime Minister himself is a much better choice, after all.

To make sure the engagement is convincing, Nicol and Fray begin spending a lot of time together. They find out that they have a lot of things in common and become closer, eventually developing feelings for each other.

Unfortunately, Nicol and Fray think that their feelings are not reciprocated because this was meant to be a temporary engagement.

Their friends realize what it’s happening so they make plans to help them confess their feelings, which is easier said than done.

It was understandably difficult for Garen to drink himself into oblivion, given both his size and innate tolerance for alcohol--even though it was just about impossible, the key there was ‘just about’. And where there was a will, there was a way.

What had he said and done last night? While the former was likely best left unknown, the latter was incredibly obvious, judging by the pounding headache currently hammering away at his skull. He wasn’t looking forward to the bar tab once he figured out which establishment he’d set his sights upon, really--there was damage control to be done as soon as he stopped feeling quite so terrible, and the commander could only hope that he hadn’t wound up doing anything like the last time he’d successfully gotten himself into blackout territory. On the plus side, he’d actually woken up in a real bed this time around--small mercies, to be sure, but it certainly made it easier.

As tempted as he was to simply mash the pillow over his face and try to sleep off the headache that continued to assault him, he forced himself up into a sitting position, squinting against the dim light of morning filtering in through the blinds. Garen rubbed at his eyes, putting forth the effort to chase away the lingering lethargy that threatened to pull him back down into the bed; working through the hangover was his punishment for such a grievous breach of decorum, and he’d just have to--Wait, hold on. He wasn’t alone in the bed, as it occurred to him a moment or two after he’d actually bumped into the other figure. Very slowly, Garen looked over, concern and trepidation already creeping their way onto his face.

This was going to be fun to explain.

(( Temporary Engagement

Three days, he’d been told. Nothing terribly long, so he supposed it could have been far more of an inconvenience to be sure. Three days to–what was the purpose of this engagement again? Testing diplomatic arrangements or something of the sort? He’d have to ask one of the nobles that had apparently arranged this whole…meeting.Garen knew Nami, sort of; they’d spoken before, and he’d found her to be a pleasant sort. But marriage, however temporary, was more than a little out of his realm of expertise. He was a commander, not a husband, and he had no idea how this was going to work.

He had one pressing question at the forefront of his mind, and it was either they sort it out now or live the rest of the days in the most awkward manner possible.“…are we–supposed to sleep in the same bed?” The grimace on his face made it clear that he wasn’t at all sure he’d like the answer. Sudden marriages made for strange bedfellows in this case, and he rubbed at the back of his neck, doing his best not to fidget too much. “I am, ah–uncertain if you would…fit.”
