i think theres also something interesting to be said with book eleanors failed expectations of her life because she spent 10 years nursing her mother… nursing/taking care of people being such a female occupation but then taking her life away from her and going to hill house being a way to reclaim her freedom … and then in the show shes just like…. cRaZy

YEAH LIKE the show completely guts the book in a way that i genuinely don’t think the ppl handling it like....Got It (like this is why i assume they thought it was okay to put shirley jackson’s words in the mouth of a man)

 like honestly in a vacuum the show is like Fine but it lacks the depth of the novel and every little wink and nudge (with the exception of nell telling her therapist he’d never been to hill house, i thought that was cute) just made me wish i was reading the book instead

also like as an aside i genuinely hate that the character named after the author was so nasty and unpleasant like way to go guys

have you read the hugo noms this year? i’m working my way through them and just had to quit new york 2140 (maybe i’ll come back to it another time) but i just found it surprisingly dull for someone who has next to no knowledge about like .... the stock market. was wondering if you had an opinion on it! however, i abandoned it for the first machineries of empire, which i’m loving so far!

I think I also tried to read New York 2140 and I gave up pretty quickly.  I haven’t read the Scalzi one, and I have The Stone Sky on hold right now because it’s the third in the trilogy and I’ve been working my way through.  (I really like the series!)

I looove the other three books!  I bought Six Wakes as a joint present for my parents last winter because Mum likes SciFi and Dad likes murder mysteries.  And yeah, obviously from my blog I love Provenance and the Machineries of Empire series.  (I should re-read Provenance--I feel like Ann Leckie’s books are even better the second time ‘round.)  I just finished re-reading the first two Machineries of Empire books because I have the eBook of Revenant Gun on hold at the library and I’m excited!!!  You should tell me your thoughts on the first book!!!

I’ve also read most of the novellas!  All of them except And Then There Were (N-One) actually.  All Systems Red was pretty good but I think I had really high expectations because it sounded like it was So Exactly My Jam and it didn’t totally live up to that.  I like the Binti series fine, I enjoyed The Black Tides of Heaven and whatever the other novella in that series is called, I forget.  I thought their gender stuff was interesting.  River of Teeth was the hippo one, yeah?  I loved that, the worldbuilding was super fun.  And as for Down Among the Sticks and Bones... I think it’s obvious from my blog that I love Seanan’s work but her Wayward Children series is by far my least favorite of her stuff that I’ve read.  (And I’ve read most of it!)

have you heard of ancillary justice by ann leckie?? i just read the whole trilogy and i loved it. it's sort of similar in tone and emotional complexity to any given n. k. jemisin, i think, and the plot arises less from Big Space Battles and more from like, cultural and political intricacies. it's very cool!! the main character is a person who used to be a ship a. i. and also everyone in the main culture is she/her nonbinary, technically

ohhh goodreads is not super hard to understand!!! u should try it it def helps in the "have i ever read a book, ever, in my life" way and also organizing like a to read list

Okay, I will try to check it out... eventually?  I am very busy for the next two weeks.  (I should be sleeping but!!! books!!!)  And nice, sounds like you have great taste in books then!  Do you have any recs for me?  :)

I don’t know how Goodreads works and frankly it terrifies me.  (I probably should get an account though because EVERY TIME I make a rec list I’m like... have I read a book? ever? in my life?  I cannot think of a single book that exists in the world.  I am adrift in a sea of nothing.  Oh yeah I can just rec Machineries of Empire again, that’s a good idea.)
