There was nothing more beautiful than the sun rising over the plains. Dawn bled like a cup of coffee spilling over the morning paper, arresting Crowley’s attention. He’d always pause his chores to mark the progression from grey to blue and brilliant orange, moving like a curtain up over a stage. As a child he’d believed God must have painted the sky over the stars each day, but the farmer had long since abandoned both faith and imagination. Instead he relied on more tangible tools, the ones that could reign in 160 acres of the Great American Desert. His homestead was his Eden and he fit it to his own design.

My take on the farmer/librarian trope (can't get enough of it), set in 1895 or thereabouts.

«“Ye want to know more about our Tam Lin?” Boyd piped up.

“I would,” the Doctor replied.

“There’s little known beyond the old songs,” Boyd sighed. “I’m sure you’ve heard them.”

“Humor me,” the Doctor said with a smile.

Boyd groaned as he picked up his battered pipes from the ground and slowly began to play a series of haunting tones. Ian began to bob his head in time with the music, and started to sing the opening lines with a surprisingly brassy voice.

“O I forbid you, maidens all, that wear gold in your hair. To come or go by Carterhaugh, for old Tam Lin is there. There’s none that goes by Carterhaugh, but they leave him in a wad. Either their rings, or green mantles, or else their maidenhead…”

The man continued to sing, but the Doctor’s attention had stuck upon the second line.

“Golden hair,” he mused suspiciously, and then stood up abruptly as he realized the time had long passed since he was supposed to meet up with his companion.

“Rose!” he breathed.»

«The Doctor looked down into her eyes and Rose felt her face go hot with the intensity of his gaze.

“Nothing is wrong when we’re together,” he said in low voice before letting his fingers trace the outline of her jaw.

Rose could hardly react before the Doctor pulled her flush against his body and stole her lips into a searing kiss. She reacted quickly to his vigorous ministrations, and pushed her breasts more firmly into his touch when he brushed over the flimsy fabric. She’d wanted this moment for so long that she didn’t bother to question why it was happening now, and so suddenly.

“Oh, Rose,” the Doctor moaned as he broke away from her mouth and worked his tongue down her neck.

“Rose,” he whispered.

“Rose!”

Rose whipped around at the sound of the Doctor’s voice behind her. She was so startled she didn’t even bother to cover her heaving chest, which drew the Doctor’s attention immediately. He flushed under the cold night air and inhaled sharply. The scent of her arousal was overwhelming.

Rose turned back to the place where the Doctor had been standing previously, and suddenly realized she must have been dreaming the whole interaction. Riddled with crushing disappointment and mortification, she quickly drew her shawl around her body and tried to walk right past the real Doctor.

“Rose, wait!” he countered as he blocked her path. “What’s going on? Was there…was someone with you?”»

«“Besides,” [the chief's daughter] said in a lower voice, “it looks like you’ve already got your heart set on someone else.”

The Doctor glanced down at the Chief’s daughter and shook his head.

“Oh no, that’s all wrong. Rose and I are just mates,” he answered in an unconvincing tone.

Avril spun around and came back to clasp hands with the Doctor.

“For now,” she insisted. “But one day you’re gonna have ta tell her how ye feel. Girls like that don’t wait around forever, Doctor. Just look at the line waitin’ for her hand!”

The Doctor followed Avril’s eyes toward a group of men gunning at the edge of the crowd, each one vying for Rose’s attention.

“Blimey,” he nearly growled. “This is absurd.”

He broke off from his dancing partner and stepped into Rose’s unoccupied arms during a difficult turn.

“Hello,” he breathed happily.

Rose blinked and laughed when the Doctor swirled them around, while her previous dancing partner stood looking flummoxed.»

«“I must feed before the transition takes hold permanently!”

Rose dropped down to grab Avril’s wrist and started to walk backwards into the blazing white light.

“Stay away from us!” Rose cried. “I’m warning you!”

The fairy queen began to laugh, but as she laughed her voice turned dark and ugly.

“Warning me?” the queen mimicked. “I’m the Queen of the Fae! I’ll drink your essence and turn you into dust! What does a simple little human like you have in your defense?”

Rose retreated further and held out a staying hand that was grasped almost instantly by someone who had just arrived behind her.

“Me,” the Doctor’s voice sounded out. “I’m the Doctor, and she’s got me. Lucky break that. Not so much for you, Farenite!”

The queen hissed disagreeably at the sound of her kind’s name.»
