Once it left the pleasure quarters, it would’ve been worn by merchant class women of the shitamachi areas of Tokyo.

   There was a hairstyle known as Tenjin-mage (天神髷), which was the basis for this hairstyle. Here, they stylist simply removed the side-loops. In this modified version, this hairstyle was common among women of the middle class.

Hairstyle Name: Tenjin Fukurasuzume (天神 ふくら雀) lit. “Heavenly God Fluffy Sparrow”

  This hairstyle is a variation of the Kanto Fukurasuzume, which is derived from the Mittsuwa style, and was also very common among Tokyo’s working class girls. The difference between the this hairstyle and the Kanto Fukurasuzume is the tegara has been removed from under the middle portion of hair and, instead, that middle portion of hair is twisted and held in place with a kanzashi pin.
