My Tenkai for the Len'en Project Anniversary collab
The sacred grounds of Kan’eiji Temple (寛永寺) in present-day Tokyo as seen in “The Illustrated Legends of Jigen Daishi” (慈眼大師縁起絵巻 “Jigen Daishi Engi Emaki”) of 1680, a handscroll narrating the biography of the Tendai monk Tenkai (天海) (1536-1643) by his disciple Inkai (胤海) and the artist Sumiyoshi Gukei (住吉具慶)

More Nura Foils I Was Thinking About
Aotabou & Shoukera
Ao is a monk who gave up his humanity to protect orphans and is compared to the raging god Shoumen Kongou, while Shoukera is a creature supposedly sent from heaven to report the sins of those on earth, with the only way to avoid this being to pray to the aforementioned Shoumen Kongou. Whether the heaven thing is literal or metaphorical isn’t entirely expanded upon, but it seems they have a sort of chaotic good vs. lawful evil dynamic going on.
Kurotabou & Yanagida
The only two members of the Hyaku Monogatari Clan who weren’t created by Sanmoto’s stories or wrought from his flesh, with one arising naturally from children’s folktales about a spirit who would protect them, and the other originally being Sanmoto’s human assistant. Kuro had to be brainwashed into joining the clan, but during his time there was a favorite of Sanmoto’s, while Yanagida was his most avid supporter for centuries yet still wasn’t recognized, not even being re-absorbed into his second demon form like the others. At least, that’s how Yanagida sees it for most of the series, it’s implied at the end that Sanmoto did this not as an act of disrespect but as wanting Yanagida to stick around as his most reliable supporter in case the second revival went south, which it did. The Nose on the other hand is implied to be a traitor who never showed up to this fight, whose power Sanmoto absorbed and then gave to Yanagida.
Kubinashi & Yuiyui
Kubinashi’s arc centers around the idea that true strength comes not in having nothing to lose and being free from obligation, but in protecting what one cares truly about, that being his clan. Yuiyui’s main battle tactic is an ability that causes allies to attack and kill each other, thus defiling the nature of what he stands for. Also, she destroyed Jorogumo’s clan who is implied to be one of his closest confidantes, who (along with Kejourou) helped weave his strings.
Ryuji & Tenkai
Both are considered untalented onmyouji who have to employ extra measures to get ahead, with Ryuji being a shrewd trickster who wins through deceit, and Tenkai being a rigorous scholar who with enough time was able to surpass a prodigy like Hidemoto. Tenkai is also someone Ryuji greatly admired in his youth, and was kind of disappointed that he ended being on the wrong side of history… but also glad to get the catharsis of finally surpassing him.
Kiyotsugu & Enchou
They both love youkai and ghost stories, but the way they express this passion is completely different. Kiyotsugu is initially just infatuated and mystified by Night Rikuo like the other human characters, but later comes to understand his ideals of creating a harmonious world and uses his own influence to help carry that out. Enchou is just kind of an agent of chaos who goes anywhere and does whatever so long as it’ll make an interesting tale. You think he’s with the Hyaki Monogatari Clan, but nah, he doesn’t really give a fuck, he’s just using them to create Ao Andon so… he and Rikuo can fight, I guess? His actions are pretty evil, but they’re not even evil in a normal villain sort of way, he has very little attachment to anything besides the thrill of ghost stories and in a weird way that’s respectable. Kinda like Big News Morgans.
Setsura & “The Nura Brides” (including her own daughter)
Setsura herself is the one who hints at this during one of her interactions with Otome, but it makes more sense the more you ponder it. She’s passionate, brooding, and outwardly intimidating, while they’re cheerful, unassuming, and carry their strength on the inside. Sure they have their own personalities within that archetype - Youhime is shy but also the angriest, Otome is the most subdued, Wakana is the most energetic, Tsurara is the most overprotective - but there’s still a general trend. This outward weakness is something Setsura initially looks down on, but comes to understand their hidden capabilities: Youhime has healing powers and an unexpected assertive side, Otome helps out at the school and the clan despite not needing to as well as having to deal with a husband who’s constantly away, Wakana was able to bring Rihan’s smile back, and Tsurara became Rikuo’s head aide. That’s not to say that they’re *superior* to best girl, but they have a lot they can bring to the table as well, and she had to realize that.
I have no idea how to caption this so uhhhh
A Ceylan for fun but with some extra little wintery things added to his outfit to match with his elemental power 💙❄
Mitsuhide is that you?
So, as most people know Oda Nobunaga was killed by his retainer Akechi Mitsuhide. Mitsuhide was only Shogun for a few days before he was killed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. However, what if Mitsuhide wasn't killed?
In the service of Tokugawa Ieyasu was a mysterious monk named Tenkai. Tenkai was a very mysterious person with several strange occurrences. 1. It is said he greeted some people who knew Mitsuhide well not as "its a pleasure meeting you" but "its good to see you again."
2. After YEARS of neglect and being forgotten about Tenkai donated quite a bit of money to a family shrine that was connected to the Akechi clan. Something that given Mitsuhide's actions would have been quite taboo. Just imagine a Shimazu suddenly donating to an Uesugi family shrine. It doesn’t make sense if you aren’t family. If you want to donate to a temple or shrine Japan has plenty of them that wouldn’t be nearly as controversial to donate too.
3. It was said he and Mitsuhide looked very similar.
several other such strange coincidences also exist. For instance, Saitō Toshimitsu once served Mitsuhide. His daughter, Ofuku, eventually became Iemitsu's wet nurse (Lady Kasuga). Before she served the Tokugawa clan, she was said to have visited Tenkai. Her first words to him were allegedly, "It's been a long time since we last met" Now, personally, I don't think Tenkai and Mitsuhide are the same person. Their ages don't match up well. However, I do very strongly believe that Tenkai was likely a nephew of Mitsuhide or MAYBE, JUST MAYBE a son. After Mitsuhide's death most of the Akechi clan was murdered and their clan's name was considered taboo. It would make sense that one of them would go into hiding and use another name.
Akechi Mitsuhide and Nankobo Tenkai
I’d like to start with stating this is a facts tumblr. We aren’t going to dive too much into rumors here. Also, when we do dive into rumors we are going to also attempt to dive into facts surrounding these rumors. So, I am going to go ahead and add a rumors tag to these kinds of posts. Now with that said let us dive in! In a lot of modern pop culture a famou rumor is often discussed. The rumor that the infamous Akechi Mitsuhide, the man who killed Oda Nobunaga, and then was killed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, is actually the mysterious monk Tenkai! Mitsuhide never really died! For those of you who aren’t familiar with this the general Oda Nobunaga had a general beneath him named Akechi Mitsuhide. When Nobunaga set up camp in Kyoto and sent most of his forces East and West to conquer the rest of Japan his general Akechi Mitsuhide betrayed and killed Nobunaga. A few days later Nobunaga’s general Hideyoshi showed up, defeated Mitsuhide in the battle of Yamazaki, and forced Mitsuhide to flee. As he retreated he was allegedly killed by either peasants trying to scavenge a battlefield, or by bandits. History gets a bit fuzzy here. Now since history gets fuzzy here some people say that Mitsuhide never even died. He actually fled and eventually resurfaced as the monk Tenkai who served Tokugawa Ieyasu (no Sengoku Basara fans, Tenkai didn’t serve Kobayakawa Hideaki. I’m sorry they lied to you.). So why do people say this? Well here are a few reasons. 1. Supposedly Tenkai greeted some people that knew Mitsuhide not as strangers but as old friends. 2. Supposedly people that knew Mitsuhide greeted Tenkai like an old friend. 3. Supposedly Tenkai donated quite a bit of money to a family shrine of the Akechi Clan in hopes of restoring it. Obviously you wouldn’t do this if you weren’t an Akechi clan member or owed some considerable debt to the Akechi clan. It would be like a Shimazu donating money to a Hojo linked shrine. It wouldn’t make sense. 4. Supposedly Mitsuhide and Tenkai looked quite similar. 5. Quite frankly, people just don’t like accepting that famous people have died and we all love a juicy rumor. In modern times you still have people that swear famous figures such as JFK, Elvis, and Tupac are alive. Its hard to accept that famous people die sometimes. Now, in my opinion, Mitsuhide died at or shortly after Yamazaki. Mitsuhide was a bit old and most people in the area knew him. Also he came from a fairly good upbringing and I don’t see any way he could have “blended in” with the common man. In fact one of the reasons he and Nobunaga supposedly didn’t get along was because Mitsuhide acted too much like a noble. Also, Hideyoshi was a pretty thorough guy when it came to locking in power. No way exists that he would have stopped looking for Mitsuhide until he was certain Mitsuhide was dead. After all, avenging Nobunaga was his entire shtick while taking over the Oda clan. Then, finally, we have to consider ages of Tenkai and Mitsuhide. Mitsuhide was born in 1528 (roughly) so by the time Sekigahara rolled around he would have been 72, and by the time Osaka was besieged he’d have been a staggering 87 years old! Yet we have records of Tenkai serving the Tokugawa in the year 1624-1625. Personally, I don’t see the Shogunate asking a 96 year old man to go establish and bless new temples, nor do I see anyone from the Sengoku era actually living to be 96 in the first place. Supposing, however, that the completely unfounded rumors of people treating Tenkai like a well known person when first meeting him and that he felt strongly attached to the Akechi clan are true, I am willing to believe that Tenkai may be a son or nephew of Mitsuhide. For all the devilish, manipulative things Tokugawa Ieyasu did deep down he was a sucker for saving families and clans from extinction. If you don’t believe me just look up athe history of the Imagawa clan after Yoshimoto’s death or the Oda clan after Nobunaga’s death and look at what clan the remnants of both end up serving. Heck, even look at the clans that sided with Mitsuhide himself and who those clans ended up siding with at Sekigahara and beyond! I know this was a long post diving deep into rumors, and I have a second one planned for this weekend about Ieyasu himself but I hope all of you enjoyed it. Have a lovely weekend guys.
