I'm running out of treat idea's, so let's have a snippet. One of my favourite moments in Changeling was when I had the opportunity for Andric and Booker to talk alone, one-on-one.
I've managed a few more moments between them in Darkling, but Booker's been a confrontational little.... for a good chunk of the second book, and Andric doesn't yet know why.
"Lila never does well alone," Booker insisted and the use of her name, so rarely spoken aloud, startled Andric to attention.
"It's just that trust isn't something she gives automatically. We've both been burned too many times for it to be that easy," Booker continued, eyes still on his plate. "She trusts you. I've seen it for weeks, and if she didn't she'd never have let you inside her head. Besides, trust or not, Lila shouldn't be alone right now. Next thing we know, she'll have talked herself into doing something stupid."
"Then why aren't you going after her?" Andric challenged, his own frustration and confusion threatening to bubble up. "What's gotten into you two lately?"
Booker stilled in a way Andric hadn't seen before, and when his gaze flicked up to Andric's there was a coldness to his features that made Andric's breath catch.
Booker blinked, and it was gone. A sad little half-smile curving the corner of his mouth instead, and Andric released the breath he'd been holding.
"Because if I go it'll end in an argument," Booker said simply, before falling silent. Pointedly ignoring Andric's questions.
