a few days had passed since the night at the club, since mateo had kissed her. they had yet to talk about it, about what had happened between them before nate had interrupted them and been all crazy. she had tried to text and call him, but he didn’t respond or answer. he actually had the nerve to leave her on read, and that’s what had done the trick in sending her from confused to downright angry. which was what brought the young woman to his apartment, rapping her small fist hard on the wood of the door. “open up, mateo! I know you’re in there!” she called through the door. “you never go anywhere else!” she yelled angrily, waiting for him to answer. “mateo gabriel ruiz, open the door this instant! I am NOT going to leave until you do! and i have ALL day! come out here and speak to me like a man!”

The art of writing is an act of prolonging our lives. So is the art of teaching. We remember our writers, our teachers. As long as you remember me, as I always tell my students, I am alive.
