I think we should appreciate the Vale more since it has cool history, architecture, and is an interesting setting that doesn’t get a ton of love. It’d be the place I’d most like to live along with Dorne.
It has good agriculture and is able to support itself easily with bountiful harvests. The Vale also has a port city, Gulltown, which allows for trade with Braavos, Norvos, and Pentos easily. The Eyrie is an absolutely incredible piece of architecture, a literal castle in the clouds out of a fairytale. And I’d love to see or hear more about Runestone, which seems like it could be very interesting since the Royces have stories about magical armor and runes.
I love their history and stories too. The Winged Knight was married to a child of the forest and was known for friendships for Merlings and Giants as well as for riding a falcon, which is just a really cool story. Plus, the Arryn Kings ruled for six thousand years after conquering the Vale. And the Royce Kings used a runic crown and are rumored to have magic.
The historical figures are super cool too. Artys Arryn led an incredibly successful conquest and his descendants were able to form close relationships with their vassals which is very difficult. Roland Arryn was fostered in the Riverlands, demonstrating how the Arryns were able to build diplomatic relations, and traveled all over Westeros. And Teora Hunter gave him the idea to build the Eyrie, which was designed and constructed over the generations, by reminding him of how his own father beat the Royces. And Arryn kings were able to continuously expand their domain effectively through marriage and other means. Alyssa Arryn’s tale has an incredibly melancholy feel to it that I absolutely love too.
One of the things I like about the Vale is that they are one of the only kingdoms with successful ruling ladies in their history. Sharra Arryn also sent her portrait to Aegon and offered her own hand in marriage which is a total power move. She clearly cared for her son and we see no indication that Sharra is remembered poorly.
My favorite historical figure in Westerosi history might be Jeyne Arryn. She was a lesbian who was called the maiden of the Vale and ruled for at least 2 decades. She has some badass quotes, including, “Thrice have mine own kin sought to replace me. My cousin Ser Arnold is wont to say that women are too soft to rule. I have him in one of my sky cells, if you would like to ask him.” And “In this world of men, we women must band together.” Despite attempts to usurp her rule, she was successful and was able to deal with those who attempted to usurp her with a firm hand. She also stood up to Daemon Targaryen for attempting to claim Runestone after treating Rhea horribly and she literally banished him from the Vale even though he had a dragon. Jeyne was intelligent enough to understand the need for dragons to stand against the greens and took Rhaena as a ward. She also served as a regent for Aegon III and even died of natural causes in the arms of her lover, Jessamyn Redfort.
I would once again reiterate how impressive the Eyrie is. It is atop the tallest mountain in the Vale with 7 towers and has an incredible waterfall. The high hall is marble and there is a literal weirwood throne and a pretty cool moondoor. It is straight out of mythology and in Sansa’s story, it is almost an inverted underworld that she as Persephone is spending time in.
Anyways, I think the Vale is an incredible setting that deserves more love.
I’ll probably make more posts for the other kingdoms which I think can be under appreciated.
