Rec-It Weekend (19WK51)
The Phi of Life by Terias
Rating: Teen and Up
Pairing(s): Gen (implied eventual EraserMight)
If you guys couldn’t tell, I am a sucker for ABO (aka Omegaverse) that’s more worldbuilding than actual smut although I also won’t say no to worldbuilding and smut hehe. This fic is making the rec list because of this latest chapter (chapter four, to be precise), due to the intriguing way Terias establishes how society would handle this unique biology and all the hurdles that come with it, including the processes society has created to work around them.
Go give this fic some love!! <3

The planet Eon, Gatsby and Phage are from is called Terias and Terias is/was/will be covered in a toxic jungle type biome (think Nausica of the valley of the wind). They have a very hard time getting rid of the jungle because the jungle repairs itself so fast when damaged. This is because basically the whole jungle is full of a specific symbiotic/parasitic fungi that repairs the plants to keep them alive to use as hosts. It gets to live in the plant and the plant gets to survive everything. The only way to get rid of it is to obliterate it entirely so it can’t repair itself.
In the midst of a world war, a scientist named Dr. Tulpa (who may or may not be possessed by her own robotic creation) has the idea of using this fungus to create super soldiers bc obviously having a soldier who can heal really fast would be very convenient. She tested it out on bugs and small animals and stuff and it worked very well but she didn’t want to test it on anyone from her side of the war yet because it could still be dangerous to sapient people. so she located the nearest tiny rural town on the opposite side of the war (unnamed town) and had some people bring her some kids from the town to experiment on, which happened to be Eon, his older brother Jorden, and their friend Elaine. Elaine and Jorden both died but Eon did not and the experiment worked, making him functionally immortal unless he gets very blown up.
Eon eventually figures out he can create portals to anywhere. No one (including me) knows why this happens but it just does sometimes. The powers someone gets are kind dependent on the person: Eon’s main goal was to survive and get out and his portal power let him do that But it takes an amount of energy. he might also be able to time travel and dimension-hop but I haven’t decided if that’s canon yet.
Some amount of time later, the war is over and Dr. Tulpa’s research is rediscovered and also covered up. everyone involved is like Wow! So unethical! but also so cool… and so a company tries to recreate her experiment to make superheros. They end up making a couple but the immortality bit doesn’t seem to want to stick. then this random idiot comes along and it works on him just fine: this is Gatsby. Everyone involved is like Yayyyy! Finally a sucsess! But also Auuugggsg. Why him. He sucks. He was an egomaniac already immortality is not going to help. anyway by this time genetic engineering was also popping off so they also added bird wings to the mix which is why Gatsby has wings (he’s got magpie wings which I picked because magpies are silly and goofy and then you find out they eat roadkill and are rlly mean). Eventually Gatsby has a breakdown after the rest of his family dies of old age and the people decide to get rid of him by sending him to SPACE. The people are now working on some way to kill immortal people without getting a whole mess everywhere. because blowing someone up is kind of a whole thing.
An Amount Of Time Later, Terias has descended into a hyper capitalist hellscape that’s always got a war going on. It was only a matter of time until someone blew up the planet so everyone agreed to dispose of the nukes but also no one wanted to spend money on doing it properly, causing radiation stuff to start poisoning the populations. Also at the same time a lot of the genetic engineered people were having kids against scientist’s recommendations, passing on Weird Mutations like a cat having bird wings, which is how Phage has wings and a spooky death curse.
Over the next century society pretty much collapses because people are just Not vibing. A lot of people were getting sick and not being able to afford medicine and Dying and sometimes it was a transmitable sickness and whole groups of people would just Die. Meanwhile pollution was getting so bad that the air gets unbrratheable in a lot of places. but Also the jungle was starting to grow back and was providing clean air in some places. So that’s how the apocalypse happened which is when Phage and Luna exist. Phage still has their curse where their blood kills things in contact, which is a very mutated version of the immortality fungi. That’s how she lost her wing because a big animal chomped on it and then died with his wing still chomped and it had to be amputated.
updates on Gatsby! since i haven’t talked about him as much but i have Thought a lot.
Originally Gatsby was supposed to be a foil to Eon and i guess he still is but he is MUCH different from the original post i made. for one thing. he is a LOT younger than Eon (in years they have been alive). He’s like 140 something.
Gatsby was put into the yet-to-be-named company-that-does-the-experiment-stuff by his parents when he was very young. He was conditioned to think that this was what he wanted and so that’s what he formed his whole identity around: being cool and powerful. and also helping people. He unknowingly became immortal at 26 years old.
Terias is a hypercapitalist hellscape. So basically yet-to-be-named company uses volenteers’ children as both science experiments, money machines, and sort-of crime control (it doesn’t work nearly as well as they say it does). What they do is turn the kids into ‘superheros’, using Dr. Tulpa’s rediscovered research. There was a long gap (about 300 years) inbetween the discovery of her experiments and the actual sucess of recreating them because Eon tried his best to ruin everything while he was still trapped in the lab, including her notes. And they’d only succeeded in recreating the portal power effect and some other cool powers, not immortality. So these ‘superheros’ were essentially replaceable to them- in fact, it was preferable that they died sooner than later because it would make room for new experiements.
These ‘ecperiments’, which were people, had signed a contract that legally made them a thing and not legally regonized as a Terian. Understandably everyone who signed this contract was freaked out but they were assured that they would keep all their rights and still be able to live normally, just that it would be under the company’s juristiction instead of the government’s.
Gatsby was kind of your standard bratty guy who thought he was better than he actually was, so when he got trapped under a pile of debris from a building blowing up everyone just assumed he was dead and didn’t care all that much. Unfortunetly, he was immortal so he was just stuck there for a few months before people got around to cleaning up the debris. This significantly traumatized him. This happened when he was 30 and he had noticed that he didn’t seem to be aging but had assumed he was just aging well.
After recovering (physically) from the Incident, Gatsby resumed doing what he was doing before and everything seemed fine. He was not Super hyped about being immortal, seeing as his first experience with it had been so terrible. He did this for like 20 years until both of his parents had died and he had a public meltdown and had to take a break.
By this point Yet-to-be-named company didn’t really know what to do with him. He was not very profitable anymore. He was generally unpopular because he was kinda rude and snappy, so they tried to make him retire or at least switch to doing some kind of office job instead, but Gatsby kept finding new ways to be piss people off. All his friends and family were either dead or had stopped talking to him, and he was not doing great as a result. To make things worse, the company reminded him several times a week that no one there cared about him and they even started researching ‘the cure’, which would stop the immortality thing. Gatsby was feeling overall pretty threatened and had no idea how to get out of the situation, escpecially because it was kind of hard to go anywhere without being regonized. Hiding his wings was a Problem if he wanted to try to go undercover to escape.
Terias is part of a galaxy with many other populated planets, and most of these planets are part of the Intergalactic Alliance. This assures that people of all planets are able to exist, trade, travel, and comminicate peacefully. Terias is aware of this and the IA is aware of Terias, and has tried to reach out, but Terias refuses to agknowlage them. BUT. Eventually Terias does accept a treaty, not agreeing to be a part of anything, but purely for scientific advancment.
In this, Gatsby spots a way to escape: coordinates from where the IA headquarters was located. Gatsby is not actually very powerful at all: he has portal powers but he needs to know an exact location, like coordinates or an address (compared to Eon’s powers, where he can think of the vaugest description of a place ever and end up somewhere close to where he wants to go). He’d thought of escaping to space before, but he didn’t want to end up on an inhopsitable planet.
Unfortunetly agian, the Company also had the same thought (perfect way to get rid of this guy) and stopped him to announce that they were sending him to space! They instructed him to find the prototype (Eon), because they could learn a lot from it. They would just send him a message every few months to check on his progess. Gatsby was kinda conflicted because on one hand, it was a free exit ticket, but on the other hand, it was given to him as an order from the Company, and he was very tired of following orders from them.
He went to space anyway (he is like 93 now) which is where events take place.
Gatsby has a big but fragile ego. He really does not know what to do with his life- it looks like he has a purpose in superhero stuff, seeing how he went right back to that after leaving Terias, but it doesn’t mean anything to him anymore. All these people will die anyway. He just feels obligated to help because that’s all his identity is built on. Gatsby is fascinated by Eon, who looks like a kid but seems to have all his shit together way more than Gatsby does. Eon doesn’t really, but he is still much better at being immortal than Gatsby is.
Harry had never been this close to a girl before. She smelled like antiseptic.
