    what had he done? 

   horror and disbelief coursed through steven as he sank to his knees in the middle of the huge crater that had formed in his fight with jasper, staring down at the shards that once made up the quartz gem. he could hear a strange sound ringing in his ears, and it took him a few moments to finally realize the noise was HIM. hysterical, heaving sobs were forcing their way out of his throat, and his eyes stung from the tears that cascaded down his cheeks. 

he had reverted back to his normal size and color the instant jasper’s form had dissipated, and he reached out, desperately trying to pick up the broken pieces of her gem with violently trembling fingers. this couldn’t be happening. this couldn’t be real.

 “ p-please, come back, i d-didn’t mean - i’m.. suh-sorry! ”

“Lapis....?” She was one of the last Gems Jasper expected to see....ever, actually. Maybe she was just here to see what all the commotion was? After all, Lapis probably thought she was still out in the forest. When she didn’t leave immediately upon seeing her though, Jasper got a little uncomfortable. Wasn’t she here for Steven? 

“What do you want?”

Of all the faces she’d expected to see after being resurrected, Lapis was the very last one she’d anticipated. Seeing her there, after Steven had opted to leave and collect his thoughts, was surreal to say the very least. Quite honestly? Jasper hardly knew what to say to her.

With nothing else to do, Jasper reached her hand up and rubbed the back of her neck while her gaze drifted a bit. Looking at Lapis was hard right then. This shouldn’t have been so hard. They knew each other inside and out basically, didn’t they? After all that time they’d spent as Malachite years ago, one would think that was the case. Yet there Jasper was, hardly managing a word.

Finally, she willed herself to look Lapis’ way again. Then, and only then, did she finally work out a small idea. The conversation would be interesting, she knew, so she guessed it would be best to start simple.

“...Hey.”

Stars, that was terrible. There had to be something to make this all come together. Something that would make things less tense and weird. A morbid joke rose in her throat, but she quickly stifled it. It didn’t even sound good in her head.

“If you’re here to apologize for what happened to me, don’t. I got what I deserved.” Even that felt weird to say, Jasper thought. Then again, she wasn’t really sure of what Lapis’ line of thought would even be anymore. So who really knew what she could expect?

  rosie hadn’t been to this part of the earth for some time, but -- well, she certainly hadn’t expected.. all of THIS. staring up at the distinctive homeworld architecture.. (seemingly mixed with human design?) she couldn’t help but feel.. overwhelmed. just what was all of this? she stepped backwards, away from it all, only for her back to hit into another gem behind her, and she spun, eyes wide.

    “ oh -- sorry, i’m so sorry! ”

“Lapis?” Even with helping the other lapis adjust to Little Homeworld and Little Homeschool, Steven was more than willing to make time for his beach summer fun buddy. He wanted to check up on her. Yes, Steven knew that she was okay after the encounter. He still wanted to be sure despite that.

Soon enough, he caught sight of her and waved to try and get her attention. Steven’s hands found their way into his jacket pockets as his expression softened. Here went nothing.

“You doing okay? Not still beating yourself up for what happened with the other lapises?”

       “ oh, hey lapis. ”   steven offered a little wave as he set down his watering can, turning to wipe his hands on his apron.   “ how’re things at the school? is freckles settling in okay? ”    --- of course, freckles being the incredibly UNIQUE nickname he had given the lapis who had joined them quite recently.

“Lapis...” Even after his goodbye he’d done for her, Bismuth, and Peridot, it made sense to Steven to get a little bit of one on one time with her before he left for real. There was so much he wanted to say. When he finally had his chance, though, the words didn’t come out. Tears welled anew in Steven’s eyes and, before he knew it, he was rushing over to give her another hug.

“I’m really gonna miss you,” he told her. “B-But no matter where I go, you’re always gonna be my beach summer fun buddy.”

“I’m just so glad I got to be your friend, Lapis. A-And that I freed you from that mirror. And helped you see how great Earth can be. And...” Okay, now Steven knew he was rambling. He sniffled audibly and just held her a little closer. Not so close as to make her feel trapped within the hug, but close enough to make it warm.

“You mean so much to me. I just want you to know that. And... could I ask you to make sure dad’s okay when I’m gone?” He knew Greg would be fine. He also knew how close Greg and Lapis had gotten to one another. It made sense that he’d ask that of her, he thought.
